We stopped by for a quick lunch and tried the crispy chicken sandwich and seafood chowder, both of which were very good. This restaurant is known for their delicious sweets. While we were dining, we noticed a few customers ordering oat cakes in bulk, so we decided to try them too. They were a tasty snack! We also noticed some oats and molasses bread behind the counter that was made for the staff. When we asked about purchasing some, we were told it was not for sale. However, when we opened our bag later that day, we found a piece of the bread inside. It was also delicious! Thank you for the unexpected treat.
Our initial impression was good, as we enjoyed our vivacious, friendly server and the last of nice views before sunset. The white decor is airy and approaching elegant. There were issues with the food. A few things on the menu were not available. The server recommended the seafood, which turned out to disappointing, bland and overcooked. Conversely, the other of us had the rack of lamb which was delicious, perfectly cooked and seasoned, medium rare. Sadly we had both had mushy, overcooked vegetables, and were surprised this restaurant would serve something so unappealing. They were recommending the Jost wines, which we both had a glass of (one rosé one red), both not recommendable. On the other side, the server suggested we share a dessert, a chocolate lava cake, which was very lovely. So hit and miss with the kitchen.
The end of the season is coming soon, Cape Breton is recouping from a hurricane, and this little restaurant is finishing the season strong by providing great service and terrific food. A few food items and wine choices were not available but thankfully there were many of other tasty choices. The seafood medley and the rack of lamb were very flavorful. The salad with goat cheese is large enough for two. Hard working folks with a skilled chef in the kitchen. Definitely a little gem for Ignonish. Enough parking for all and the views are stunning.
We stayed at the Castle Rock Country Inn and had dinner at the restaurant Avalon within the restaurant. The food and views from the dining room were great. The Seafood chowder was superb and the beef tenderloin was really nice I was happy to learn that the beef is free range and locally sourced from the main land. My husband enjoyed the smoked salmon appetizer and the seafood tasting with a really good portion size and not overcooked! The dining room was busy and my only complaint was the service was a bit slow.
