Definitely a sticker shock considering this is mostly fried food. Two of us ordered the fried haddock sandwich. It came with nothing on the side (odd, typically spots like this would have French fries or chips). And they were served on thin Hors d'oeuvres plates about 5 inches in diameter. This is a plate I might expect to eat cheese and crackers off of, not a whole haddock sandwich. Not the best presentation. The buns were quite flimsy. All of that combined made for a disappointing meal for two of us. Then there was the “mini meal” with clams and onion rings. The onion rings breading was so thin, it was turned to bits if you tried to pick them up, much less eat them. I asked for a “to go” box for the remainder of clams and onion rings and was given another flimsy paper plate and a brown paper bag. I can get over not being pleased with the food itself, but when spending $100, I’d expect at least to have appropriate plates and to go boxes. Is that too much to ask? This feels like just another place that gets a crowd and a line out the door because it’s “famous” (TBH, that’s why we went) but doesn’t actually provide quality food and basic essentials.
My wife had read good things about the Clam Box so while staying in Gloucester we took a drive to Ipswich. Cute iconic place. Lots of people stopping in here.Oh boy! Really nice staff and atmosphere but I was disappointed with the fried clam strips which could have been mor e flavorful and Frieda little longer. At least they were tender. My wife loved them and she knows her clams. Onion rings lacked flavor too and the onions were a bit on the undercooked side. Clam chowder had a nice flavor but it was a lot more potato than clams. I wanted to like the place better.
I recently relocated back north from the Cape. Clam Box is exactly as I remembered!!
Best place to get native clams, scallops are fantastic. We come here every year when we visit and it's so consistently great.
A classic New England spot that’s all about fried seafood done right. The building itself is iconic, and the food lives up to the hype. Whether you’re getting the famous fried clams, scallops, or fish, everything is crispy, golden, and full of flavor. The portions are generous, and the laid-back vibe makes it perfect for a casual meal with family or friends. It’s the kind of place where you can taste the tradition in every bite—definitely worth the trip if you’re in the area.
