Why open a place serving Sichuan food without 花椒? 水煮魚 is ok, but the broth was too thick for some reason. There was some chili oil on top, but no 花椒. It tasted like they used 花椒 oil instead of whole peppercorn. Flavor lacking as a result. 夫妻肺片was disappointing. The beef was sliced rather thick, meaning the tendons were chewy and unpleasant to eat. No spices on this dish either, only oil and sauce. I would expect some chili pepper, 花椒, at the very least. Can you even call this 夫妻肺片 without the spices? It was also served warm, which is weird for a room temp/cold dish. Struggled with rating since for the area, it's probably as good as it's going to get. But compared to these Sichuan dishes I've had elsewhere across America, I'd say this is a pass.
I arrived just before mid-day break but was lucky to get served. Marina the hostess/server was very pleasant and helped me with my order. Friend recommend the Cumin Beef and wow was I glad I tried it. The beef was perfectly spiced and so tender. The broccoli was crisp and delicious. I should have taken a picture.
Hey folx! After many years, I had lunch at Magic Wok yesterday (701 S. Roan St, JC) and it was better than I remembered! Jasmine was my waitress and she was attentive..the whole nine! I started off with their hot sour soup which was amazing. Great tastes of umami in it. I ordered the chicken with scallions and chili since I was craving a dish very spicy. It did deliver on the heat scale with the jalapeños which was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted it spicier with chili oil, but passed on asking for an additional request. Eggrolls were alright, but my Mains were top notch. I'm definitely going to make it a habit on going back! ?? (Lunch Mains are now $10.50 as opposed to $9.50), but well worth it! Dietary restrictions: They are happy to accommodate any dietary restrictions. Their vegan tofu is delicious.
Our first time at the Magic Wok, our waitress Marina, went above and beyond, explaining their menus to us! The Scallion pancakes were delicious, we are vegetarians and there are plenty of options to choose from ! When we are in the Johnson city area we will visit again
Flexible menu and good people. Shout out to Taylor.
