Cafe-Restaurant de Deich Graf - Kalkar

The small picturesque hanseatic city of Grieth with charter of 1250 was our destination for a short visit to the lower Rhine area close to the Dutch border. Really nice village for a half day's visit and then clearly eating at the Deich Graf is a must. Great view overlooking the Rhine river from the terrace, we enjoyed lunch here. The food was very good and the service very friendly and attentive. Our choice was the schnitzel which was great, very well prepared and delicious. But the blueberry pancake we shared for dessert was the best, extra class, just awesome... wish we could get the recipe :-)

I have been to the Deichgraf on a few occasions and have never been disappointed. The menu offers a variety of classic (seasonal) German dishes and some Mediterranean inspired dishes. The interior is traditional and the view over the rive Rhine is beautiful. I absolutely love the steak with peppercorn sauce. Recommended!

If you are cycling the Rhine Route (or just passing through) you might do well to avoid this place. After 55 minutes wait, we enquirer if our food was coming and was told "in 10 minutes" - we said we weren't prepared to wait any longer and, miraculously, it would be ready in 1 minute! When it arrived it was very mediocre. As we were keen to be on our way, we asked for the bill - euro 38 - and I gave euro 40 over. To my astonishment the waitress offered no change; when I asked where the change was, it was grudgingly handed over. Avoid!

Cosy furnishings. The restaurant was very well visited for our visit. We could stay without reservation. From order to food went 1 hour. However, the operation came regularly and asked if there was still a need to drink. Waiting for the food was worth it. It was very delicious.

The place where we could not visit Corona, but the huge pasture is very nice to stand (also with dog) legs.
