My husband and I went to Morton 's for a change because of DineLA Restaurant Week. Turned out to be more expensive and not as good as both Flemings and Ruth 's Chris, so I doubt we 'll go back. We were shown to our table and the hostess put two menus on the table, which turned out to be a cocktail menu and the wine list. No food menu. Our waiter came and asked if we 'd chosen wine ! How do you know what wine you want if you 've not yet even seen the menu? I don 't drink and my husband always has steak, so in our case it didn 't really matter. The selections were absurdly expensive. I didn 't look at it myself but I think my husband said he refuses to pay $19 for a GLASS of wine, which must have been the cheapest. So he chose the cheapest bottle $50 instead. The waiter asked what water we wanted then disappeared. Granted, he didn 't know that I don 't drink alcohol, but he didn 't ask me if I wanted anything. When he returned, I had to ask for the food menu and for a soda. He returned with only the standard food menu then disappeared again. When he returned I had to ask for the Restaurant Week menu which eventually arrived. We made our selections, me off that menu and my husband off the standard menu as he didn 't want an appetizer and I don 't eat dessert special menu included appetizer, entree, side and dessert . So I ordered the prosciutto mozzarella wraps, pork chop, garlic green beans and key lime pie for $65. Hubby ordered the New York strip and spinach with button mushrooms. Those together came to around $80. The food The appetizer was delicious. Not really what I had expected and most flavorful. Pork chop was good. Very big and nicely charred on the outside but moist within. I took over half of it home. Garlic green beans didn 't seem very garlicky to me. Like at all. Not much flavor to them. NY strip was just okay. Nothing special. Tender, but not amazing flavor. Spinach and 'button ' mushrooms were tasty, but the buttons must have come off a giant 's coat as they were rather large mushrooms! The key lime was taken home and was nice enough, but nothing special. The first wine selected wasn 't available, so he had to choose another. Was nice enough for a $15 bottle, but it cost $50. Overall, service was ok, pleasant wait staff, but what 's with the whole 'blood out of a stone ' menu thing? In my opinion, you get very much more for your money at both Flemings and Ruth 's Chris. In particular, the Tomahawk at Flemings and the Filet at Ruth 's. And their wines are much more affordable. And they give you the menu immediately!
We were here to celebrate a birthday. The food was great, however, the service/waiter was okay that turned into circus. The waiter’s name was Derek, who was sarcastic with humor and making comments that could be offensive. I don’t know if that’s his/her style of communicating with his guest. This waiter HAD THE AUDACITY THAT MADE US FEEL OBLIGATED THAT HE WAS ENTITLED TO GET or GIVE HIMSELF 20% gratuity. Yup you read that right, he gave himself 20% gratuity. After I told him, I’ll write the gratuity when I sign the receipt. But we got the receipt, Derek came back and said, “please sign this I already added 20% gratuity. Thank you so much. My name is Derek. If you guys come back ask for me.” He also said some comments at the beginning of the dining Such as “are we dining here on a budget?” After we said no to ordering wine. Derek sounded abit frustrated already. That’s when I realized his agenda, which was, to rack up the bill SO HE CAN GIVE HIMSELF A DAMN 20% gratuity. First of all, we don’t drink that’s why we didn’t order, except for one. So we had him adjust the bill and he said another comment, “You gotta take care of me as I took care of you guys.” I’m like wow. After all that he didn’t feel any kind of embarrassment. Sorry this is the first time I had this experience where the waiter was entitled to give himself his own percent of gratuity. I tip for service, but after his fiasco, I loss it. He was lucky we still gave $45-50 tip. I understand that everything is overpriced right now, but the nerve of this waiter just unbelievable. Maybe the 20% gratuity that he felt entitled with was needed for his lip fillers or Botox. I don’t know.
Got a phone call AFTER I had paid and left. The hostess told me nevermind . Then I get a text message demanding that I pay for my meal even though I already did. Then I called the restaurant back. I 've kept my receipt as proof of purchase. But I asked them to write back either by text or email if they could correct their statement but they don 't want to. Keep in mind, this is the same restaurant I was dining at a few years ago wondering how the lobster bisque was and was told the cost instead of info about the taste quality. Lastly, I provided my credit card on my way out before the phone fiasco, and waited five to ten minutes to get my parking paid. Who knows what was happening with my credit card in the back for so long. I feel punished for eating here even though the waitress was very good and attentive.
Nice for special occasions or business dinners. The fish is just as good as the steaks. We tried one of every side dish and they were all delicious, especially the creamed corn and truffle fries, but the lobster mac n cheese was the table favorite. Then, for dessert, the bananas foster cheesecake was so delightful that we ordered a 2nd one!
