I live in Kailua and had no idea about this restaurant until my family decided to try it for dinner. It was a lucky find, as most other places were closed or closing early, but Tanuki was open until 8:30pm. This turned out to be fortunate, as we had some of the best sushi we've ever had! The rice, nori, fish, and creamy wasabi were all top-notch. I ordered 5 different types of sushi and each one was delicious. We will definitely be back to Tanuki for more sushi in the future!
They have the best king salmon nigiri. we came here 2 years ago and it was as smooth as butter. we came back and it was just as good.
Here tonight. absolutely worst service. the hostess/server was so rude. negative stars would be better suited. no greetings, no offer for drinks. when we wanted to order a starter, she asked if we had tried it before. We didn't. then she told us we wouldn't like it at that time. She was nice to what seemed to be a native. if they are a tourist, they will not waste their time here! they are not welcome! sushi was okay, but definitiw wasn't the best.
The quality of the sushi was top notch, without being touristy or arrogant. I would recommend it very highly.
