The room was outdated with some areas like the chair, pillows, bed and carpet showing signs of either, or a mixture of, severe wear, poor cleaning, and staining. The bed was uncomfortable and pillows were poor. We checked dietary requirements (health/ allergy related) ahead of arriving and upon check in only to have the actual experience become very awkward and challenging. For dinner, my wife had a gluten free/ vegan burger which was poorly cooked and tasteless. I had gluten free fish and chips which was bland and clearly defrosted before fried as it mushed as opposed to flaking but mysteriously stayed piping hot for twenty minutes. The AA rosettes must be pride of place on the microwave. Drinks took forever to arrive after the long wait to even be asked for any. Finished your pint and want another? Forget about it. Nobody cares. Breakfast was abysmal with the recommended dish at check in (gluten free pancakes) transpiring to no longer be gluten free despite it clearly stating so on the menu. I had a gluten free cooked breakfast which had one piece of bacon, one lorne sausage, the SADDEST little pot of cold beans, 3 tiny hash browns, watery mushrooms and an unseasoned pile of lukewarm spinach. No effort to cheer the plates up despite less ingredients due to allergens, charming. There were only five other diners at the time so it wasn’t a shortage. Eerie music and extremely stuffy atmosphere. You’re a 3 star hotel in the borders, cheer up a little Beautiful sitting area and fireplace above the steps down to the funeral esque dining area but no music or atmosphere just absolute silence. I have no idea how the waiting staff cope with the energy drain of this place all two of them. Despite being dog friendly there are no bins to be seen in the massive garden area so we had to take this through the lobby and out front. A bag of steaming hot poop carried through the main entrance, feeling classy. We seen glassware and afternoon tea remain on tables for six hours and pint glasses untouched overnight after twelve hours by the seating in the main room. We left poorly fed, poorly slept and felt nothing but overcharged without a chance to express that as nobody cared to ask on checkout.
We booked in at the Ednam house hotel very last min to get our heads down while on our travels, the hotel was full with character, clean did the job for a relaxing nights sleep. We stayed in one of the loft rooms and have to say the shower was Amazingly powerful Hot! Big shout out to MARGRET on reception she was amazing! Went above on beyond from checking us in to checking us out! Also FREE secure parking was inc! Wouldn’t hesitate to return!
Brilliant location, staff.... terrible, rooms are small, dusty, and cobwebbed. For how much you pay for the room you are better of staying somewhere else Rooms: Small, dusty, cobwebs. However we'll spaced bathrooms which were clean Walkability: Grounds to walk around and is in the centre of Kelso so only a few minutes walk Food drinks: We decided not to have a meal at hotel as the bar was not inviting and you had to walk past toilets which had a strong aroma! Breakfast was delicious though which saved the trip!
