What a charming, delicious place! There aren't many highly rated eateries among the cluster that is close to the Mount Rushmore landmark, however this place is just a mile or two outside of that--totally worth it. Powder House (also their lodging has been around for decades and the patio views are breathtaking. Our server was adorable, energetic and helpful (forgot her name, sorry! . I ordered the Queso burger, subbing a side salad (a little small perhaps for fries, which was crisp and delicious with (I'm guessing homemade ranch dressing. The burger's attention to detail included crispy crumbled bacon, crunchy dill pickles, Queso (could have used more imo , jalapenos, and the ever sublime toasted Brioche bun. In the dining room, you'll feel like you're at a cross between a retro ski lodge and vintage log cabin.
Not perfect but several standouts in a town full of fast food/pizza joints so I think they deserve 4.5*. Called 45 min ahead to reserve a table and the method worked as we were seated right away when we showed up. The place is much bigger that the online pics and very busy on a Monday night. Our waitress was very pleasant, accidently charged us for an extra bottle of wine-(I will ALWAYS insist on checking the bill before inserting my cc into their portable machine). The food: My son 's cordon bleu was soo good he made me nervous than my own home cooked one could be dethroned. I got the wild game sampler with stuffed quail instead of sausage. The buffalo short rib in bbq sauce was very good--the meat is a bit dry so the bbq sauce is a must. The stuffed quail was delicious but small so glad I had other things on the plate. The elk was absolutely inedible--cooked properly (medium rare) but so tough I couldn 't even cut it with a sharp knife. They would have gotten me another proper piece of elk but instead I finished my wife 's powderhouse steak-baseball sirloin covered with artichokes and bernaise--I couldn 't believe how good it was. The tenderness of filet and the flavor of rib-eye. I 've never had sirloin this good--and the topping just made it better. Prices were excellent for the quality/quantity
We had great service. Our food was delivered fast and as ordered. Buffalo fillet was wonderful. Spouse had the combo with quail, elk and bison. We were both very happy.
