However, many establishments either skimp on traditional aromatics or drown the dish in coconut cream. So, when I stopped by Tasty Thai at the QV market for lunch and ordered their Green Chicken Curry, I had low expectations. To my surprise, the dish was delightful. It was a simple plate of rice and a bowl of curry, but the flavors were spot on. The chicken was tender, bamboo shoots added a nice crunch, and the addition of zucchini was a pleasant surprise. The meal only cost A$9 and was worth every penny. I look forward to trying it with a papaya salad and a pinot grigio for dinner one day. Overall, Tasty Thai is a great option for lunch in Melbourne.
You would think that with the number of Thai restaurants in Melbourne that it would be easy to find a decent Thai Green Chicken Curry. For many westerners it is the first Thai dish they had and with its use of favours from Kaffir Lime leaves, galangal and lemon grass it is, for many of us, the signature dish for the whole cuisine. So it is disappointing that most Thai restaurants in Melbourne either can't be bothered adding those aromatics or drown them in suffocating coconut creme. I therefore did not expect much when I pulled up to a lunch stand at the QV market with a hankering for Thai: the Tasty Thai and ordered Green Chicken Curry. What a pleasant surprise. The dish was simple as you would expect with a lunch stand: a plate of rice and a bowl of curry. The flavours of the curry did high fives on my palate just as Thai curry (or indeed any Thai dish) is supposed to do. The chicken was juicy and there were tasty bamboo shoots to add texture. My wife was the first person in the world to discover that zucchini is an outstanding addition to Asian stir-frys so I was astounded to find zucchini here. All up it cost A$9 bucks and was worth every penny. I'd like to try it with a papaya salad and a pino grigio as part of a dinner some day. As it is there are far worse ways to have lunch in Melbourne.
Food: The food was a disappointment. It lacked flavor and was not prepared well. Definitely not worth the price. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Save your money and go somewhere else.
I am tired of McThai.
