Downside is the wait on weekends due to the small venue.
I do love Kuu Cafe Japanese Kitchen. They do really great simple comfort Japanese food. I had the Ebi Katsu which was delicious. The Taco Rice was an interesting concept but I wasn’t in love with it. Their Matcha Affogato was so delicious and creamy but I wish there was more for the price I was paying! Their cafe is quite small too so sometimes there’s a bit of a wait but if you’re lucky you can come in a dine on delicious comfort Japanese food in a really cozy, casual cafe with lovely polite staff.
Very homely place. The place is small but cosy. Specially love the curry, really fragrant and reminds me of when I was in japan. The location of this place is a bit off the usual path but it’s definitely worth a trip!
I really wanted to try their breakfast platter for the hungry, but it was sold out because it was too popular! However, I got to try the Smoked Trout Ochazuke which was perfect since we were sitting outside. I didn’t know how it looked like at first but I was pleasantly surprised at how pretty it looked when it arrived. There was a cute teapot on the side that held the broth which you can pour into the rice yourself. The tastes flowed together so well without overpowering each other. <br/ <br/ I had a scoop of my friend’s curry. What I liked about it is that the curry compared to other Japanese curry was that it had a slight spicy kick. It isn’t very strong but it’s detectable.<br/ <br/ And the perfect way to end an awesome meal was to get their Green Tea Ganache Cake. A definite 5/5!<br/ <br/ As for the staff, they could’ve been more confident when being asked about recommendations, but were very friendly and willing to help. The cafe was also small and cute. Loved the aesthetics.<br/ <br/ instagram.com/pictorialfood
Once in a while I would make a trip to South Melbourne to have lunch with a friend who used to work in the area. Since she changed jobs, I rarely go that way anymore. She introduced me to a cute Japanese café named Kuu which serves delicious and authentic Japanese street food.<br/ <br/ LOCATION<br/ <br/ Kuu Japanese café is situated on the outskirts of the busy Clarendon Street on a quiet and not very obvious York Street. Here you find the small café – as if in Tokyo, you would only find unique and delicious small cafes on the outskirts of the CBD, easy to get to yet away from the hustle and bustle. <br/ The café may look simple from the outside, however once you walk in, the interior is brightly lit and very cute. Atmosphere is relaxed and it feels like you have entered into a homely place.<br/ <br/ SERVICE<br/ <br/ The staff at Kuu cafe are always friendly and attentive. The service is prompt and friendly. Local customers enjoy ordering take away coffee and food from Kuu café. They also offer delivery service which is great.<br/ <br/ MENU/PRICE<br/ <br/ Chicken Katsu Sandwich, $13.50<br/ Chicken Katsu Curry, $16.50<br/ Japanese Cheese cake, $6.80<br/ Matcha Green Tea Latte (regular), $5.00<br/ Iced Matcha Latte, $7.50<br/ <br/ VERDICT<br/ <br/ When I visit Kuu café I enjoy ordering the chicken katsu.<br/ The chicken katsu curry is very generous in size, not on the portion of the chicken katsu but also curry gravy. Its such a hearty meal and always feel satisfied afterwards.<br/ <br/ The Chicken Katsu Sando is an awesome stack! The chicken was super tender and quite a generous size tasty with the light and crispy panko flakes. Cabbage slaw salad was crisp and fresh, a nice balance in the sandwich.<br/ <br/ The Iced matcha latte is such a lovely drink especially on warmer days. Matcha green tea flavour is not overpowering but enough flavour to enjoy. <br/ I love the cute little bear latte art in the matcha latte. The drink has a lovely soft matcha flavour with no bitterness at all. So different from other matcha lattes I've had. It's smooth texture and consistency was enjoyable to drink.<br/ The Japanese Cheese cake is delicious! Very fluffy, soft and extremely creamy very different to western cheesecake and the texture is way different to Uncle Testsu's. I prefer Kuu's homemade Japanese cheese cake. Soo light, and delicious!
