The vegan course is clearly stated to be free of animal products (as indicated on their website in Japanese), so there is no need to worry if you have reserved it. This is a higher-end restaurant that offers multiple courses featuring various types of tofu. I found the meal to be exciting and enjoyable. The staff members were all very friendly and the building itself is beautiful. We had a lovely dining experience here and I will definitely return in the future. Please be aware that the vegan course is not available at their Kiyamachi location, so if your hotel is making a reservation for you, make sure to call the Gion branch instead.
We had dinner at the Gion location, which is the only one that offers a vegetarian/vegan option. We had our hotel make a reservation for the vegan rokuhara meal for us the day before because we have limited Japanese language skills. When we arrived at the restaurant, they asked if we ate eggs and then served us an entirely vegan meal with plenty of food. Despite the 5100 yen per person price and one of our kids not eating much, we felt satisfied. The dinner lasted almost 2.5 hours and included various forms of tofu for those who enjoy it. The staff was friendly and spoke enough English to communicate with us, and they also had an English menu available.
We booked 2 days ahead and took the rokuhara set tofu/veg meal Everything from start to finish was amazing. Not sure about the other location but the Gion restaurant was top class. The servers were very helpful and explained each dish to us and what to do with the booked tofu which was refilled once we had eaten it all and each course tasted fantastic At just over 5000yen it's not cheap but we were very full and took almost 2 hours for lunch This set contains no meat fish or dairy The surroundings of the restaurant were also lovely....see my pictures Ignore the 2017 negative comments. Book ahead...book the set menu and you will love it as they catered for us being vegan
The restaurant offers elegantly prepared, simple and excellent food. They offer a set meal that includes fish and egg, but I opted for the hot tofu and a tofu skin dish a la carte. While the hot tofu is a bit pricey, it is generously portioned and they will provide additional tofu for free upon request. The service is exceptional with plenty of English spoken for ordering. The location is stunning, with outdoor seating likely requiring a reservation, but the interior is also beautifully decorated.
Location: tosuiro has 2 restaurants, with clear local maps and photos on their English language website. We went to the Gion site: on Higashioji-dori btw Yasui Higashiyama and Yasui Konpriagu shrine. It's a few blocks south of the landmark Yasako shrine, down the street from a Lawson across from a 7/11. It's an easy walk from the many temples in south Higashiyama, such as Chion-In. Ambiance and menu: the Gion site has an open kitchen tatami room, small garden and small dining room with Western. Style chairs tables. The food is Beautifully presented, and servers are friendly, speaking some English. The all vegan set should be reserved a day in advance, by phone in Japanese. We asked our Air B B host to make the call--no,problem. Dishes included chilled tofu, hot pot, grilled miso tofu, stuffed tofu , pickles, soy ice cream . A fabulous splurge in a tranquil atmosphere.
