I have gotten to know all of the long-term staff and George himself; they all felt like family to me for more than half my life. I remember the summers when I was a preteen getting a slice after school with a drink in the classic styrofoam cups. With the recent news of George retiring/closing shop and not choosing to continue on the legacy with his son or other family, it just feels like a punch in the gut. Chains don't feel the same as a family business. They're not a lot of mom-n-pops left.. La Cañada has lost a local legend (everybody knows Georgee's), and I'm sure I won't be the first to share the heartache. Enjoy the well-deserved retirement George! I'll miss you guys.
My favorite local place for pizza in the La Crescenta La Canada area. I've had their bbq chicken, meat lovers, pepperoni, and cheese pizzas. The ingredients are fresh and you can taste the quality. Some might say it's pricey, but you get what you pay for.
Eats: Chicken Strips, Curly Fries, La Canada Special Pizza, and Baked Ziti Takes: Of all the items we've tried over two visits, I'd go back for the pizza, specifically the special (their version of a meat lover's pizza). It hits the spot if you want to eat something quick and casual. There's a good topping:dough ratio. The small is more than enough to feed 2 people if you're super hungry. Comfortably, it would feed 3 without leftovers. Most patrons were ordering pizza. It's a family friendly establishment. The chicken strips and curly fries were okay. Their baked ziti surprisingly was topped with fresh tomatoes. It wasn't your typical baked cheesy dish you'd associate with ziti, but instead it's more like pasta with tomato sauce topped with cheese and tomatoes. Service: Order at the counter, and your food will be delivered to your table. Price: Reasonable. Parking: Private Lot Location: Less than 10 minutes to the Descanso Gardens. Bottom line: Go here for your quick pizza fix!
We were pretty disappointed upon hearing that Georgee's closed for good. We found it one day several years ago while being in the area and hungry, so we stopped right in. Their Margherita and Hawaiian pizzas were always great, along with their Caprese salad and spinach salad. It quickly became one of our go to pizza joints. Staff was always nice even when we would often place a phone order 20 minutes before closing, and also very patient to answer questions regarding food allergies. So long Georgee's... we're not too wild about large pizza chains, but we'll see how Fresh Brothers pan out...
Food is decent enough that I 've been going there for the past 4 years, weekly. After today 's experience I will not go back and neither will my coworkers. I had ordered 4 sandwiches for me and my coworkers. The cashier lady, always pleasant, told me to go sit down and wait because the food wasn 't ready. So I go sit in the area they told me to sit and sit. I mind my own business while waiting for the food. About 10 minutes later this man comes out of the kitchen and shouts from a distance: Are you waiting for order or dining in? I replied I 'm waiting for an order His distant shout then grows into a yell directly to me THEN WHY ARE YOU SITTING THERE. SIT ON THIS OTHER SEAT! THATS ONLY FOR DINING! Then turns to his employees YOU GOTTA DO A BETTER JOB OF TELLING THEM WHERE TO SEAT! Then disappears back into the kitchen. The man it turns out was George himself, presumably the owner. This was my first time meeting him after coming for 4 yrs. Let 's break this down... I 'm a loyal customer sitting where their employees told me to sit. There 's no signage that says the seat is for dining only. He clearly knows that his employees are poorly trained and likely told me to sit at the wrong spot. The seat is also in plain view from the cash registers and the employees clearly saw where I was sitting for those 10 mins. And didn 't say anything. He comes out of the blue and yells at his loyal customer who wants to support his business instead of retraining his employees. The cashier did apologize on George 's behalf but it was one of those blanket apologies not addressing the actual situation. I thought about finding George in the kitchen and confronting but he was so aggressive in the way he treated me that that effort would have been a waste of my energy. So there you have it. Make your own decision on whether you want to support such business. I will not. And I threw my sandwich away. Couldn 't stomach eating it.
