Came here before reading reviews as it was near hotel and I wanted to be a bit light. I love it! Service was excellent prompt, friendly, .. even my last taco reheated a 2nd time as by the time I got to him it was not so hot. I had the Guac and Tacos al Pastor and both were great. Really liked the restaurant .. somewhat small, but lots of tables and interestingly decorated. Friends of EAN University said they were using them for lunch. And you will see the reviews are much stronger written for reviews in Spanish than English. I didn't mention any of the other reports. Actually wanted to come back a second night, but there are only too many great options in Retiro .. and glad that I tried others. But this is a great place with amazing prices when you pay in US$.
When this place opened, this was a real taqueria chilanga. Very authentic, great ingredients. Unfortunately, the place has changed property and the quality of ingredients, especially cheese, tortillas and meat, are of very moderate quality. Sad. the Arrachera is not Arrechera meat, the cheese used in all plates except the Chicharron, does not melt right (just rough), stick to the foundations of the pastor, Chicharron, and good aguas. I just wish the new owner had the same attention in the food as the cool decoration...
I love Mexican food and this restaurant does a pretty good job of representing authentic Mexican cuisine, and for the food alone should receive three stars. Unfortunately the service was poor, and the negative energy made this a less than pleasant experience. In short, our waitress was miserable, and the rest of the staff also appeared less than enthusiastic about working there. It's not that she did anything terrible to us, although she could've left the child at our table with the placemat she was innocently playing with. Instead she made a point of taking it away from the girl while clearing plates. We weren't finished, and there was no reason to take away the placemat. Further, the staff was just inattentive and dining with friends and family should be a great experience no matter the level of restaurant. If my energy is being drained by the negativity of others, than it obviously detracts from the what should be a happy experience.
My meal was amazing here- possibly some of the best Mexican food I have had. While I have only eaten here once, my husband has been here several times and loves the food even more than I do. The atmosphere isn 't the best, but once you get your food you don 't even care about the small crowded space you are crammed into. If you are a fan of spicy, ask for their picante salsa and they will bring you a bowl of spicy salsa that will burn your mouth off. Don 't make the same mistake I did- only put a small amount on your food!
