We visited for lunch today (October 2015) where again the same waiter was absolutely fabulous. The food was fantastic, especially the seasonal pumpkin soup starter. The desert was very different with a selection of items, all delicious, but great to have the choice and variety. All in all recommend to any visiting guests to the Vendee/Deux Sevres regions. We will be back very soon.
With a holiday home in the region, we became regular guests of The Cheval Blanc. Always pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the combination of flavours. We tried several restaurants in the region but none of them can beat The Cheval Blanc. The only thing we miss is a terrace to sit outside during the summer season. There is not enough space around the building to create a terrace.I can imagine the owners would have created one, if this was possible.
Often passed this restaurant but had not eaten there since a change in proprietor. Called in one Friday lunchtime shortly after noon and were welcomed warmly and seated quickly. The room soon filled up with diners. Although the full menu was available we had the plat du jour at 19.50 euros for 3 courses including coffee. Entrée was home smoked salmon salad, main was pheasant with a good selection of seasonal vegetables perfectly cooked and a dessert of cooked pineapple with a thick sauce and ice cream. The meal was delicious and lived up to the Maitre Restaurateur label. The owners were very attentive and efficient and hoped we would return one weekend when the full menu was more refined including foie gras and coquilles St Jacques. We will return !
Ambiance pleasant. Waited 10 minutes, and had to ask twice, for a wine list in order to order a bottle of wine instead of an aperitif. Perfect wine. Chose from main menu. Mise en bouche excellent. Starters good oysters and millefeuille cod. One main was agneau good, though covered in sauce and would have been better visible! Filet steak of boeuf was appalling gristle and tendons very hard to even cut and impossible to chew. Ruined a special meal and, although the steak was graciously offert (free), the insult still cost nearly 90 euros. Why oh why?
