Here's an old restaurant bar like it's almost gone. everything is in the plate and the atmosphere with a lot of locals. simple cuisine with good franquette and terroir.
A good surprise that this little country restaurant very well welcomed it offers you a meal to your budget that is not very high after a holiday with the smile a rare commodity of today a quick service and a barman that is always there with the smile then exit from the highway to lande stop you to the golden phean for the pose of noon and you will be well received do not expect you to a 4 star but a very good reception without chichis
We were driving from La Rochelle to Niort and wanted to stop somewhere for lunch. Turned off the N11 at La Laigne and drove into the village - this place seemed about the only place in town bar the boulangerie! It's definitely a locals haunt - was a bit strangers-walk-into-a-saloon when we arrived, not helped by our collective failure to communicate in French. Phrasebooks at least would be helpful, here, as the proprietors had little English. We tried to tell them we were looking for a bite to eat, orders some beers and coffees and then waited for a menu. After about 10 minutes the man appeared bearing platters of pastrami, that weird French version of bacon with chips and a massive tomato and onion salad smothered in a very good vinaigrette… we didn't even realise we had ordered anything so it was a bit alarming - but luckily we were not vegetarians so tucked in.I don't know whether they took advantage of our total inability to explain what we wanted (hiding the menu) or whether in this part of France it's perfectly acceptable to just provide a number of 'assiettes' of food, just assuming we'll be happy with whatever!Still, the food was excellent. One of us said 'cheers' for the beer… but the man serving us thought he had said 'cheese'… and promptly returned bearing yet another assiette… du fromage! A true Manuel moment, I observed.All in, 2 large beers, one small beer, an espresso and the food they brought came to 50 euros which, although not extortionate, was a sum I suspect was only charged to passing-throughers with a lack of local lingo…They were kind enough to fill up our water bottle with chilled water from the bar, which was nice - at least I was able to request that with no mishaps!
