I had andouillette parmentier, which looked unappetising but actually tasted OK, but my husband had steak, with the worst chips we have ever come across. They were soggy, sodden and looked quite repulsive, as if they had been re heated in a microwave. We sent them back, and the next lot were slightly better, but still the worst chips we have ever had, still slightly soggy and twisted, and with an odd 'off ' flavour. We should have just walked out. Absolutely terrible especially for a restaurant in the Michelin red guide. The only redeeming feature? A lovely waitress, who was charming and doing her best. She even came running after me when I left my raincoat behind. I can only repeat: this was the worst meal we have ever had, anywhere. And if Le Balata is a different establishment in the same building, I apologise. But they should dissociate themselves completely from All Square.
Been here several times and always found the food exceptional, however went on Sunday and had a complete bad experience. The food is not good, most of the wine is unavailable and the price has been hiked up the reason the chef/owner has recently left. Really sad to give it a bad review.
Visited the Balata on Friday night. Slightly concerned about previous review. However was not disappointed. Great food was served, house wines delicious. And excellent service Top marks to the Balata Team
We have been to the Le Balata several times over the years, and found the food very good, but this time I can safely say that the food was disgusting. My wife myself and our two children booked a table for lunch. The kids ordered from the kids menu while my wife ordered a two course meal option and I orderd the three course set meal option. My daughter’s meal was the beef stake, she got the smallest piece of dry burnt meat imaginable and the accompanying potatoes were old wrinkled leftovers re-fried. My son also got these re-fried leftovers but he got the fish, which was fine. I also was given burnt fries with my main which were awful, the stake was ok but nothing special. What I found really bizzare was when our main courses were finished myself and the kids were given our deserts which we had ordered in advance, my wife was ignored and never offered any desert course. This restaurant used to pride itself on their cuisine but judging by our experience the are now happy to serve any old slop. Red wine was average and they also charge for bread that wasn’t ordered.
We own a house at les golf du fontenelles where Balata is positioned between 6pm and 7pm each evening is happy hour which makes the prices more reasonable we also enjoyed a platter each of meats and cheese selection which again was good value. Being able to sit outside and enjoy the view made it even better.
