The Plough turned out to be a fantastic alternative. It was about a half-hour walk to get there, but it was definitely worth it. The couple of pints I enjoyed before dinner were a bit pricey, but I didn’t mind, as the higher prices might keep the rowdy university crowd away and maintain a more pleasant atmosphere. For my meal, I ordered the Cumberland sausage with mashed potatoes and vegetables, which was quite a generous portion—definitely more than one person should eat in one sitting. Overall, you get great value for your money, and the quality of the food exceeds what you would typically expect from a pub. The atmosphere is calm and clean, with several locals enjoying drinks and meals. This is truly an excellent spot for a quiet evening dinner.
The clientele is quite diverse, consisting of people passing by on the busy A6, boaters from the nearby canal marina and visitor moorings, local residents from Galgate, and occasionally students from Lancaster University. I find the food prices to be mid-range for decent pub fare in the area. Recently, the quality of the food has been consistently good, and we always look forward to dining there. The portions are incredibly generous—perhaps even too generous at times, as it can feel a bit overwhelming. But you can always leave some if you need to! Just check out the photo of the fish and chips I posted to see what I mean about the portion sizes. Overall, it's a fantastic pub, and we definitely need more establishments like it!
Olde English pub with good beer, good food but few veggie options. Friendly staff. Sky Sports News.
I happened upon this cozy and inviting pub while returning from a weekend trip, and I immediately sensed we had found something special. The staff greeted us warmly, and the menu was both diverse and enticing. I chose the Steak and Ale Suet Pudding, and even before it arrived, I could tell I was in for a delicious experience, as everyone around us was happily enjoying their meals. When our dishes finally arrived, they did not disappoint—the pudding was cooked to perfection, and the vegetables were clearly fresh. This is pub food at its best: well-prepared, reasonably priced, and accompanied by friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere. It's a must-visit!
