It is simple, simple, but very tasty and well prepared breakfast. Do not expect Full English, that is France, but you will certainly be well prepared coffee, excellent pastries and fresh juice, and that is what you need. The service is quite relaxed, but surprisingly fast, and we will certainly be back for a quick breakfast next time we are in the city for early morning shopping.
Many works at the renovation of Hotel de Milan since last year. The apartments/rooms are very well furnished: plugs have direct Apple plugs. Good, constant hot water. The hotel is located in the centre of Bourg: the cycling of the Alpe D'Huez region. A great base for the tour. The centre of the cycling world in July. Friendly, attentive staff from a family-run hotel that keeps the classic elements of the state-of-the-art in combination with the modern expectations of travellers in this part of the world.
Let me begin by telling you that I am not a regular restaurant-reviewer. This is my first review. I am not planning on writing many more. The only reason for writing this review is to prevent future guests and cyclists of having the same incredibly bad experience as we did. Hotel de Milan is a beautiful old and vintage/withered hotel and brasserie (the e in “brasserie” is missing on the outside wall of the hotel) located in the center of Bourg d’Oisans in the French Alpes. On the bicycle you can reach the foot of l’Alpe d’Huez in 5 minutes. Our group of 20 cyclists was pleasantly surprised that we were able to reserve a table at noon for that same evening, Other restaurants were fully booked. At 8 pm we arrived for our dinner. The ambiance in the restaurant is great. All of the 7 or 8 tables in the room were filled. Our 3 tables were neatly set near the large windows looking out over the small center of Bourg. So far so good. Soon we became a little bit worried when we noticed all service was being done by one woman taking the orders and bringing plates to the table one by one. We heared the table next to us had been waiting 2,5 hours for their food. This was gonna be a long sit. Although we were hungry, we were not in a hurry and decided to wait. While we were not that bothered waiting, it would have been good to have a steady supply of drinks coming to the table. Sadly, the only waitress was too busy serving other tables and bringing in plates of food one-by-one that we were only able to buy one round of drinks while we were waiting, Not the best business-model in my humble opinion. The food… First up on the tables were plates of salad, they were fine, although quite expensive for what we were getting; 14 euro per plate. Second up: the first 3 hamburgers, they looked and tasted fine! The fries were tasty and crunchy. The mayonaise was ordered but did not arrive. The pasta’s were edible but nasty. The last six of us were watching everybody eat and still waiting for our meals. The hamburgers on the other plates looked edible. There were still 5 hamburgers to come. We were negatively surprised when we found out they made us a new creation! The waitress brought us 5 buns filled with a blob of cold and dry minced meat, covered by a potatoe-rosty. The cold minced meat was minced and rather cold. Absolutely inedible. We had been waiting for too long and our appetites had disappeared. We decided to go and pay for the dinner we did eat, No client is king in Hotel de Milan. One of the women working in the restaurant kept trying to convonce me she cut the cold and dry minced meat herself that morning with a knife. There was no discount. Only angry faces telling us we had to pay or they would call the police. We did pay them. Hotel de Milan is an old and withered hotel/brasserie that does not have the man-power, skill and service it needs to serve a hungry cyclist-mob. If you are in the neighborhoor and if you are a big hungry cyclist-mob, or even if you just want to have a nice meal, please stay clear of Hotel de Milan. Rating 1 star out of 5.
