Located in Spain and sung in French, this renowned opera by Bizet is a tale of passion and tragedy. The production takes place in Havana, adding a unique flair to the captivating Cuban culture. The love triangle between Carmen (Milijana Nikolic), Jose (Brandon Jovanovich), and Micaela (Stacey Alleaume) showcases beautiful music and emotionally charged scenes filled with intrigue, jealousy, and destruction. To lighten the mood, a talented group of young urn boys entertain with impressive acrobatics and interact with the military men. The set is detailed, featuring a gypsy camp with a full-size carriage. Colorful costumes, stunning choreography, and dance sequences enhance the overall experience. The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra provides exquisite music, making for a delightful evening at the iconic Joan Sutherland Theatre in the Sydney Opera House.
Disappointing. I have seen Carmen at various venues more than ten times before, and this was the worst rendition yet. It seemed like the stage production was cutting costs wherever possible. The two main actors were mediocre at best.
Disappointing. I've seen Carmen more than 10 times before in different places and this is the worst of all. It felt as if the stage design brief was "reduce costs as much as possible!" The two lead actors were not great to say the least.
Set in Spain and sung in French this famous opera originally written by Bizet is full of passion and tragedy. This production is set in Havana to capture the fascination the "west" has with the amazing Cuban culture. The love triangle between Carmen( Milijana Nikolic),Jose ( Brandon Jovanovich) and Micaela (StaceyAlleaume) produces some magnificent music and very moving scenes as they are drawn into a complicated web of intrigue, jealousy and destruction. To lighten the mood there is a fantastic troop of young urchin boys performing great acrobatic feats and cheekily interacting with the military men. The set in quite drab but includes a full size combie van in the gypsy camp. The costumes are very colourful accompanied by fantastic choreography and dancing. The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra provide beautiful music. It is quite a treat in the famous Joan Sutherland Theatre of the Sydney Opera House!
