I wish I could give this a 'sometimes one dot, sometimes four or five dots' review, but I can't.So, lets start with the good. The food. I mean it, on a four or five dot good day, with everyone in a happy mood, if you hit the 'menu midi' slot, you might get up to five courses, many tasting very nice, though it helps if you like (and don't have any ethical issues with) foie gras, something which is much loved in the region and at a great price, too. Nice food, much of it locally sourced, nicely prepared in an area that's not overrun with decent restaurants if I'm honest. However Hit them on a one dot day and well, even if you speak fairly good French (albeit with an English accent) or perhaps aren't actually physically related to the sister and brother team who run this small restaurant, don't expect anything but mediocre food, served with a snotty attitude and - for us - downright rudeness and bare-faced lies.We have eaten there several times, however for us as foreign holiday makers, making a pre-booking by phone is daunting, so one Sunday evening, late in the season, we stopped in and asked if they would be able to fit us in - a table of two. The restaurant wasn't full by any means, but madame was fairly snotty in saying she'd see what she could do for us as we had 'pas de reservation'. We were given a tiny side table, and the very pleasant young waitress reached to get a tablecloth for our plastic-topped cafe sized table. The owner snapped 'Pas de reservation, pas de nappe' ['No booking, no table-cloth]' at the girl (perhaps not realising that I speak French) and the poor lass darted away. I was all for leaving at this point, but we were hungry, and had eaten well there in the past, so we decided to stay. I then ordered bass (bar) for my main meal. When it arrived, however, I was presented with a plate of bream (dorade) - I don't mind either of these fish, so I decided to just get on and eat it anyway rather than have a row about it in a foreign language. However, as one of the main reasons for us holidaying in this area is so that my husband, a keen fisherman of some fifty years experience, can go bass fishing, we've both seen a few in our time and know the difference between the two fish extremely well. When madame came to clear the plates I asked her if she could settle a small question for us, as tell me whether what I'd been given was bass or bream. She smiled tightly and insisted it was bass - a straight out lie. I presume it was because they only had bream left that night - and I imagine it may well have come straight from a freezer. French friends who live locally aren't surprised by our experiences that night - apparently this isn't untypical of them.If they hadn't wanted our custom that evening, I wish they'd said so right at the outset. I honestly would rather have that than the begrudging, rude, and ultimately, deceitful treatment we got. It's such a shame, because they have the skills and capacities to really shine in this area - and it's a lovely spot in a charming little village. We are habituees and have been coming to this area for a dozen years now. We'll never go to this Les Genets again. If they will lie to your face about what they've given you to eat, I dread to think what they might be doing to it behind the scenes if they take a disliking to you.Desolee de vous derangez, madame.
