We came here last Saturday to dinner, we had not booked, but they found us a table although they were very busy. this place is clearly family oriented and had a good mix of young and old. eating was good enough, we were not 100%. sure what we have ordered because they don't speak much English, but ended with a very nice trio' from a meat stew, a cheese pasta dish and a cold ham bowl, with pomme frites. very beautiful and different from what I would normally order. wein is cheap and they make a large selection of locally brewed beer.
Le Comptoir du Malt in many ways resembles any other American or inspired by them chain restaurant, but the menu clearly shows that the concept is targetted a local audience in the north of France. Our food was OK nothing special ..however uplifted by some very good local beers. The service and ambience was as you'd expect from a family restaurant, and at least, a visit to this kind of establishment gives you a pretty good I think picture of the what the local population looks like. Besides, it is, as far as we could see, the only real restaurant in town, unless you count Buffalo Grill, McDonalds and Burger King as restaurants. I don't...
Externally more appealing than a Buffalo Grill but essentially similar. A large chain and this restauarnt was popular probably exopleined by the dearth of decent independent or family run restaurants in Lievin. Ordered a flammekeuche as a starter. Men did not state how big...this was really a sharing dish for two, but it was absolutely delicious. Ordered a steak for main course asked for it rare but it was definitely blue when served no problem I like blue steak, but anyone ordering should be aware. Chipos with which it was served were not good. They were served in individual chip pan baskets and from the number I could see that were going back hardly touched, others obviously thought so too. Why weren't the cehfs or management noticing and doing something about this? Wine was served in a trendy plastic ice bag not a bucket. This was leaning and would not stand up straight, meaning it had to be propped up by the bread basket. Expensive meal, not great.
First, I have to say that eating here was great. can not be failed in any way. but they have one of our courts wrong and at the time when it arrived, all the others had finished! 30 minutes wait, then we all had to sit and watch as a child eat. they have the flag of the union that flies outside, which is in the rule a note that they speak English. we found out that only one person did this and he was very busy. I know it's lazy of us expect everyone to speak English. I usually command in French, but sometimes it's easier if they don't have to if there's a big group. this was a very popular shopping center for English-speaking visitors. as I said, eating was brilliant, but only very slow. a quick lunch was made in 90 minutes.
