Salty Dog had everything we needed to re-energize after coming from Melbourne on our way to Apollo Bay. Simply put: fried seafood and chips definitely make you full. We ordered a basket of fried cod, scallops, and shrimp. Along with the seafood, we were bestowed upon a plethora of fries that surprisingly enough- we finished! The batter was good but a bit soggy after it had been hanging out with the fish too long. The highlight was definitely the fried scallops that we had. Wish we could have had more of these juicy suckers! While it's a bit pricey, Salty Dog delivered and we were better off with it on the rest of our Australian road trip. Caution: No bathrooms inside, so if you need to make a stop for the potty, best consider another option.
Looks good.. but it's not. I had to throw away most of the food. The batter was soggy, the fried fish still had skin on, and the sauces were mediocre.
This place at first felt like a huge tourist trap. Pricing seemed way over the odds. Took me a few days, but I finally succumbed to my love of a good piece of flake. I have to say the deep fried flake was delicious, and the home made tartare set if off nicely. On the downside, the batter seemed to go soggy pretty quickly. I might have left it in the paper bag too long, but i had to use a fork in the end, it was so hot and a little too soggy to eat with a traditional torn piece of wrapping paper. That said, the fish itself was moist and generous and befitting of a seaside village like Lorne. They have a lot of different menu choices and good salads. They just know you don't have a lot of choices in Lorne and charge you accordingly. I'd go again, but make sure I don't leave the fish in the bag before I eat it.
First experience with fish and chips in Victoria, was overall satisfied. My local mate from nearby said the prices here weren't great compared to places further up towards Geelong, but seemed ok. We ordered several items, fried and and the grilled fish and all came out ok. As an American I'm always surprised when they charge for ketchup, but what can you do? Not a huge problem. Beautiful city and surrounding areas. Gorgeous you should visit! Can't wait to return!
Ok fish and chips. By far the greasiest I've had in Australia. Could not believe they did not include any sauces to go with your fish and chips. Tartar sauce , ketchup or whatever will cost you another $2 per small container.
