However, my experience in August 2017 was a bit disappointing. While it wasn't terrible, it certainly didn't match my previous visit. The chips were mostly obscured by the fish on top, and the mushy peas—which I suppose I should call pea puree—barely made an impression on my plate. Fish and chips isn't meant to be fine dining, so there's no need to act like it is!
My first visit to this pub was quite chaotic from the moment I arrived. There was no clear guidance on how things worked here. We were seated at a terrible table right by the entrance, which turned out to be a noisy area filled with shouting children. I ordered the chicken roast, which consisted of a small chicken breast—certainly not what I would call a typical roast. The vegetables were overcooked and lacked any flavor. The only bright spot was the gluten-free cheesecake, though it was unfortunately marred by a wafer. I eventually ended up sitting outside among a crowd of loud children, with a police helicopter taking off right behind me. This is definitely not the place for a quiet Sunday lunch, unless you're with kids.
The garden at the back offers stunning views of beautiful fields and woodlands, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a pint (or two) of McMullen’s real ale on a warm evening. While the pub is located in the heart of Epping Forest and can be a bit tricky to find, it’s definitely worth the effort. One amusing detail that has remained unchanged over the years is a large tank filled with water, featuring a chain that hangs into it. There’s a sign on the tank that reads ‘Beware of the water otter.’ Of course, kids can’t resist tugging on the chain to see this elusive otter, only to discover a kettle at the end—quite humorous!
The best way to get to this place is walking, yes you can drive, they have 2 large carparks but put a bit of effort in if you can. Get hold of the OS map Explorer 174, then either get out at Loughton Station (Central Line tube) or the shorter route from Chingford Station (Over ground Rail). Epping Forest is generally easy walking on nice wide paths, note these you may have to share with an occasional arrogant middle aged horse riders, believe me they think they own the place, just hold your temper, their not worth it.Anyway the Pub, it sells McMullens Beer, that in it's self is a good enough reason to go, AK is a nice pint of Ale for a hot or cold day and is not too strong so many can be drunk. There's seats outside, and an area inside for kids to eat too.The food's served is at reasonable prices and is generous it's a pub type menu, but what do you expect.Have a walk and a meal with a few beers, but don't forget it's about 2 miles back to the station.
