Benmarl Winery is a craft winery and vineyard that opened in Marlboro, New York in 1971. It was founded by vintner Mark Miller. The history of the 37-acre estate actually goes back to the mid-1800s when it was purchased by Andrew Jackson Caywood. He was a leading authority in winemaking and viticulture in the Hudson Valley region and helped to introduce many grape varieties. He was the first to plant grapes on the property. Miller purchased the property in 1957 and continued to improve the property and introduce new grape varieties. He named the estate Benmarl (Gaelic for Slate Hill . The winery operation opened in 1971 and the vineyard was later granted the New York State Farm Winery license No. 1, which makes Benmarl the oldest continually-operating vineyard in the United States. In 2006, Benmarl was purchased by Victor Spaccarelli Jr. and his family with the intention of reviving the spirit of Hudson Valley viticulture and process of winemaking. They replanted many of the abandoned vineyards and helped to refurbish the estate. Victor 's son Matthew is the current winemaker and Benmarl currently produces about 20 different wines. My wife and I recently visited Benmarl Winery while we were celebrating our sixth anniversary in the Hudson Valley. Our visit coincided with the winery 's annual Grape Stomping Festival, so the place was hopping! The views of the Hudson River Valley from the estate were just breathtaking! We first took a tour of the winery 's production floor where we had an opportunity to taste some of the wine grapes, sample an unfiltered wine straight from the tank, and even got to speak with winemaker Matthew Spaccarelli. Next we had a tasting of six of their wines including the Dry Rosé, Stainless Steel Chardonnay, Slate Hill Red, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Marlboro Village Blush. The latter was our favorite! The winery also makes delicious wood-fired pizzas on the weekends. We enjoyed the Don Cheech (half pesto, half tomato with fresh mozzarella and basil topped with fresh grape tomatoes and parmesan cheese and the Zambito (Margherita-style topped with Italian soppressata . Before leaving, my wife channeled her inner Lucille Ball and stomped on some wine grapes. Although it was cold, she said it was so satisfying. We had such a fun time at Benmarl and would love to return in the future!
The winery has beautiful views. The wines were great. We sampled a bunch. Food is cash only, it's separate from the winery so you have to pay and pick up to bring back to your table. The pizza and the fries were delicious. I'd recommend the pesto pizza, that was the table's favorite.
Beautiful , amazing , relaxing , Great and fun place for a date, family or friend weekend . The wines were great and food delicious . Everyone is super nice and friendly . My Husband and I absolutely LOVED it . Don't forget to take a towel to wash and dry your feet after grape stomping .
I wish I could give this place a 10 star review, they are absolutely such an amazing placed owned by the sweetest family ever. We were visiting all the way from ct for my friends bachelorette party and we went here for our first stop, we had some great tasting wine and ended the evening with some great tasting pizza. Luckily enough, when the bride went to go order the pizza she met the owner of the whole winery and he told her about a band that was playing that night and line dancing and of course we were like we have to come back!! We all ended up going back later that night to listen to a great band and dance a lot, what made the night even better is the band let the bride of our group sing a couple songs with the band which was super cool to see and hear! We got to talk with the owner some more and we had the best conversation ever and turns out the air bnb we were staying at he use to live in and own! Such a small world but made the moment so special. We connected so well with the owner he ended up giving all 3 of us a free bottle of wine. I defiantly left that place with a full happy heart and will defiantly be back. The vibes were so amazing and I can't wait to make it a yearly trip back with my forever friends.
