A nice touch is all the chefs give a big shout out to you when you arrive, as a way to welcome you. I thought that was cool. Service was pretty good. Food was good but really nothing special to write home about. I probably wouldn't dine here again. Apparently it's just been taken over by Neil Perry who started Rockpool.
Look the food and the service is good. The thing is that they're doing Japanese street food, but it is too refined, too polished (sounds daft right?) It's just a bit pretentious, completely ignoring the principle of wabi sabi, which is the best of Japanese street food.
Business dinner, been here before for private dining and spent a lot of money. Looking forward to my return was extremely disappointed. Service was at best frustratingly slow, 20 mins after sitting down we had the first person approach our table. The rest of the meal was delivered piecemeal and main courses with 20-30 minute gaps. Attitude through the evening was arrogant and condescending by a 20 something year old girl running the front desk. Rest of the staff were not much better. Ordered expensive Sake, gets served with water tumblers, not sake glasses. "We don't have those" was the response!!Hello the place is called "Sake"!!After complaining numerous times had the manager come to our table. He was very apologetic and offered to give us our dinner for free, which was nice, and which we declined, as that was not the point of alerting him to the poor quality of service. Stay focused Sake and lift your game.
Sydney is better though - maybe it's ambiance as well? Sydney staff are More formal/ fine dining and the vibe is better. The food at sydney is also better ( melbourne wasn't bad it was great - sydney is excellent instead of great)
Decor and position beautiful! Food way over priced! We had lunch there and ordered tempura mixed dish $29 - what we got, literally - 1 mushroom, 3 small prawns, 1 tiny piece of fish, and a bit of pumpkin! 6 tiny pieces in all! That was not lunch, it was a entree! We ordered soft drinks, as they only had expensive boutique beers and wines, overall we spent $65 for a tiny snack. I know it is the "arty farty" area, but this was just plain daylight robbery!
