The iconic South Melbourne Market Dim Sim, which is itself has risen to a pricey $2.50 per piece is being sold here for $2.80. I've seen these in other places but none with this price hike.$2.80 for a single steamed sim sim from an ordinary no-frills greasy spoon fish & chip shop. This is some sort of joke. They added soy sauce themselves (I prefer to add my own) and completely drowned it so for that reason the flavor wasn't that good. But I prefer to choose myself how much sauce I want. Not planning a return visit. Not at these inflated prices.
I have seen mixed reviews about this place, and that's all good part of the entertainment.Well I have been in there maybe four times now. I can report the following.....:)Staff are overly friendly nor are they rude, plus they always seem busy. The shop itself is clean and functional, not somewhere to go on a first date, or maybe even a second. The fish and chips, average. I have found the portion sizes to be just right. Tonight my flake was over cooked but my chips were perfect, last week I had hose fish and I am really convinced it came out of a tank in the house, but the chips were nice. The very first time I went in the food was great. So, dont expect to much, its functional, average food, and nearly always prompt.
These guys just don't know how to be friendly or cook fish and chips, last time I went said keep the change only to find it was one of the stingiest portions ever, this time after watching the proprietor be extremely intolerant with a person who was clearly handicapped he wanted to charge me $1 for using a card, just mean, miserable and gouging. Plus the food isn't very good.
We waited 45 minutes for our order (for 2 people) to be done because they got it wrong and forgot some parts. So while half the order sat on the shelf getting soggy they were back peddling cooking the rest of the order. The end result was horrifically soggy food, cold, under seasoned and no apology or even a smile. They desperately need customer service training and basic business management skills. Theyre like 3 clueless kids playing shop.
I went to the shop at lunchtime on a Thursday it was busy which is a good sign and the service was a little slow as it was busy but the food was sensational the fish was crispy and tasty as was the fish and the chips were nice as were the potato cakes and a decent size and there was no stinginess like some shops when youget the 50 cent sized potato cakes
