I walked in through the bar, saw the Fitzroy jumpers on display and remembered this was in the movies of the Jack Irish novels. Good pub food. Laid back atmosphere. The wait and bar staff are very attentive and helpful. Meals are delicious and generous. It's a good inner suburb hotel for a meal if you're in the area.
Decided to try the Napier because of the REAL open fire and Sunday roast. Didn't expect the eclectic decor and atmosphere and genuine not "curated" charm, replete with local characters. Long tables for families or to share with friends or strangers add to the appeal. slow roasted brisket was unctuous and generously provided with traditional vegetables. MIL had a prawn stew so something for everyone. rhubarb and Anzac biscuit crumble was a cut above your average pub. will be back to try more of the regular menu. wine list though not extensive is honest and balanced and well priced
I am visiting Australia from the US and this place has fantastic Kangaroo. The staff recommended a fantastic Pinot from Tasmania to pair with the "Roo". This place has a very cool culture and is well worth a visit. Will recommend this place to coworkers, friends, and visitors.
Relaxed local bar/restaurant right in the heart of Fitzroy. The food was actually quite good. The staff was really nice.
I went for lunch here one day and I ordered a chicken parmigiana (or parmie in Australian) because everyone one knows that this is the lunch of champions. When it came out it overhung the plate by several inches. I estimate it was 17 inches long. You could get kangaroo on it instead of ham but I'm an old school sort of bloke so chose the ham. I have to say it was an outstanding parmie and has entered our private folklore as a talking point. For me it was a happy story of conquest, for my wife a story of shame. Anyhow... I was halfway through this monster parmie when she asked if she could have some since I had plenty. I reluctantly agreed and she cut off a good size portion and then threw it out!! I loudly protested but she said that once I had given it to her she could do as she liked with it. I said I would have had no problem dealing with the full parmie and she said she knew, that's why she threw it out. I chugged down a few expensive beers and then when we got home I felt like an alien face-hugger was trying to blast its way out of my stomach. Oh, the pain, oh the wailing and gnashing of teeth. She said she should have thrown out more. I should have eaten a salad but I'm scared of spiders. One of the best parmies I've had.
