Ordered a few lunch specials. Portion of rice is great if they had bit more portion of main food it's perfect!!
After reading the review by Jojo Armani for Wok N Rock, I was keen to try them out for myself. I'm not too sure what made us think that 4 dishes between two was a reasonable amount of food, but the more the better right?<br/ <br/ What I really liked about the dishes here was that they weren't overly oily, and not overwhelmed by too much seasoning. The mixed veggies with tofu were cooked well, retaining a fresh crunch with each bite.<br/ <br/ Even without the heavy-handed seasoning, the pipis with black bean sauce, and the ox tongue both had flavours that jumped out at us. The pungent black bean of the former, and the spicy kick from the chillies from the latter, made for a piquant and bold dish.<br/ <br/ The shredded duck vermicelli was low on duck, but as were with the other dishes, was lifted up by skillful execution.<br/ <br/ Service was polite and prompt. The extensive menu means that we missed out on ordering some dishes this time, so a few more return visit is definitely foreseeable.
Really great staff and the food was amazing to share in a large group. Definitely worth the trip and will be back again soon.
4.5<br/ <br/ We were going to have some roast duck for lunch at this other place on Centre Road but it was shut despite the stated opening hours, so my partner suggested Wok N Rock instead just a couple of blocks away.<br/ <br/ Having been here once with his family before, he commented on how good the food and service was. Well, say no more.<br/ <br/ The same guy who had previously served my partner still recognises him despite his visit being many months ago. What a memory!<br/ <br/ We teed off with some Wok N Rock Steamed Homemade Shanghai Style Pork Dumplings (aka Xiao Long Baos) and they were sensational! Every single one remained perfectly intact, hence that glorious burst of soup each time we sank our teeth into the delicate skin.<br/ <br/ Despite skimming through their main menu, there were enough variations of rice and noodle dishes on their Lunch Specials to hold our interest.<br/ <br/ In Jojo’s books, no ox tongue on the menu ever goes unnoticed so the Ox Tongue Rice With Chilli was a no-brainer choice. For $16.80, I’ve never had a plate of ox tongue so generously piled up that it left me contemplating how I was going to tackle the entire mound. But, all it took was one bite and I didn’t look back!<br/ <br/ The Hokkien Style Seafood On Fried Rice was an unfamiliar dish to my partner. There wasn’t any description on the menu, so I explained the dish to him and he remarked it sounded like something that’s right up his alley. Indeed it was. He liked the smokiness of the egg fried rice against the thick gravy on top, plus the fact that they weren’t shy on the seafood.<br/ <br/ While it wasn’t our initial plan to come by that day, we’re glad to have found a reliable option in Bentleigh that we will happily frequent.
