My husband and I went to The Ship Inn for Sunday lunch on September 3rd. We both ordered the roast Angus beef with Yorkshire pudding, gravy, and mixed vegetables, including roasted parsnip. The beef was so tender that we didn't even need a steak knife. The staff accommodated my request for a low-fat meal due to my gallstones by leaving out the rich white sauce. The only thing I would change if I were the chef is to not place the meat on top of the roast potatoes, as it made them less crispy. Despite that, the potatoes were still delicious. The Yorkshire pudding was a highlight, puffed up and perfect. Overall, we enjoy dining at The Ship Inn and appreciate their variety of wines, gins, and beers.
I have dined at this restaurant before and the food was excellent. However, my husband's dish (fish and chips) was not up to par, while my roast beef was okay but could have used more gravy. I had to ask twice before receiving any, which was disappointing. The staff, on the other hand, were delightful and very friendly.
The pub has a nice appearance, but all the tables were dirty and there were cigarette ends scattered everywhere. The drinks were very expensive, with a pint of Peroni costing £6.75 and an undrinkable pornstar martini cocktail priced at £14.75, which I had to send back and ultimately leave. It seems like they don't know how to make cocktails and are just making up prices based on appearances. I wouldn't recommend this place; although I don't mind paying the price for quality, I believe that Wetherspoons down the road is probably cleaner and serves better cocktails. This may not be a popular opinion, but I'm just stating the facts - this place is one to avoid.
We were a group of six for dinner. The staff were helpful, even cleaning up a broken glass on the sidewalk outside, but seemed overwhelmed by their small ordering devices. The food was a mix - the fish and chips were good, but the Caesar salad was very mediocre with large, tasteless chunks of chicken. The sorbet was lumpy, but the Eton mess was decent. The pea soup was not well seasoned, and the mackerel pate was not smooth, with a significant chunk of solid fat making it unappetizing. Overall, the menu was rather dull.
