It is a flat bread with various toppings and we sampled 4 different ones. The food in Alsace is more German than French. Good beer from Meteor Brewery. Large Hop growing region. worth a side trip to Wingersheim to visit to Hop fields
A stone's throw away from the Marne-Rhine Canal, this restaurant is a favorite stop for most canal cruisers. Our group of 20 guests was warmly welcomed by the owner's spouse: the local Meteor beer from 8 generations ago still produces a magnificent light and refreshing brew then came a succession of 5 different Flammekueche or Alsatian Tarte Flambee, a thinly crisp/chewy crust bread dough smothered with different types of cheeses (from creme fraiche, Munster, gruyere) then with toppings such as sliced onions, lardons or smoked thick bacon, mushrooms, vegetables but never tomatoes or tomato sauce. One of the better Flammenkueche in Alsace not to miss particularly this would be the last of the 4 generations of owners of this restaurant who will sell to new people since none of their children wish to continue in the business.
Dined here tonight, very large portions, we had the Cordon Bleu with local cheese and a mushroom sauce, also a large pizza, food was tasty and as mentioned large serving, drinks and food at a reasonable price as well, cosy inside, would have liked outside but all tables were booked, last stop before Straussburg on the canal boat so worth the effort, friendly helpful maitre de,
Me and my husband visited this restaurant on the evening of our arrival (we've rented a house in the village Waltenheim-sur-Zorn). We were served by a very friendly lady who also happened to speak German and the food was delicious. We ate a salmon appetizer and then ordered two Flammkuchen, which were the best I ate so far (and we have them on virtually every street corner in Germany). Prices are okay if you consider France is not the cheapest country in Europe (around 10€ for each Flammkuchen, I think we spent about 50€ including the appetizer, beer/glass of wine and tip), but considering the delicious food and the impeccable service, it was definitely worth it! Bonus: The owner builds miniature versions of the traditional German houses, they are all displayed in the dining room, including a version of the restaurant itself.
Super welcome by a very warm couple. They're a passion that's never the same. Their little cakes are exquisite. a wonderful human and gustative encounter that deserves ample detour that we have made for this excellent discovery. Do not hesitate to go there. It made us a crazy good
