We came last minute to Alentejo without much preparation which is unlike me. I bought a guide at El Corte Ingles about the region and found this typical restaurant in a tiny neighbourhood of Santiago do Escoural. We arrived on Saturday afternoon and were the only ones there. The owner Manuel was incredible. Bought to the table some typical dishes and we had pork and bacalhau for lunch. It was a great experience. Even though the mains were worth it, the desserts were the star of the show. I highly recommend ‘Manjar do Principe’ and ‘Chuveirada’. The wine list was filled with regional jewels. The best of it was that they were on the wall and you would walk to the bottles to choose.

I’ve got two recommendations for this restaurant, so once nearby last weekend, did a reservation for lunch. The place is small and in the middle of nowhere, just use your gps and all good (15min from Montemor, all straight road). Book a table in advance, it’s popular among locals. I’ve heard about the mood of the owner, but no complaints on our side. Very cordial. The food is what made us go there. Delicious typical portuguese dishes, with several specialities from the region. Good option if you are nearby. Give a try, but reserve a table.

We happened to end up in the Azinheira even though it is an inconspicious place, well hidden in a narrow street with traffic. We were welcomed by the owner who treated us like royalty. The starters were authentic Alentejano and very tasty. The main course, Coelho a Cacador was perfect. We were served Plansel wine. of a winery not far away. With a great sobremeas, a selection of various local treats the lunch was closed. Perfect food, perfect servcie, nice place.
