Dh and I went for supper on a Friday night. It was very quiet. The waiter told us that often on Friday evenings there are events, so that people don't tend to go then, and that they sometimes even close on Friday nights. Luckily for us it was open. Dh found this place by googling French restaurant in west side Montreal. We knew nothing about it and decided to take a chance as we were looking for somewhere new to try. It's a good place for a special occasion, as we found it to be romantic. The decor is wonderful, warm and a bit eclectic, good music playing softly in the background, the building itself is fabulous. Waiter was friendly and very professional. It's in an old textile, then toy factory, and the building is huge. It's been refurbished and is home to many trendy businesses and trendy apartments for rent. After our meal we wandered around throughout the whole building, making it up to the 4th floor. It's just gorgeous, fabulous old wood floors and walls. Here and there are sitting areas with great furniture, one has a library, there's an old car in the middle of one hallway, a huge wooden horse in another, suits of armor here and there, fabulous wooden staircases, tons of charm. After awhile the security guy came and found us (there are also cameras everywhere, which we hadn't noticed), and he helped us back out, but did give us the manager's business card. The building is called Chateau St. Ambroise. As for the food, it was good. I had the mesclan salad, which was a big portion and reasonably priced. Dh started with the shrimp, which was $8 for 4 shrimp, so a bit pricey. I had the salmon which was good, and came with well cooked veggies and nice rice. Dh had the tasty bavette (not sure what the English name is, it's a nice piece of meat in a sauce) with excellent fries. We shared the chocolate and Kahlua mousse (yum).! Dh had a couple glasses of wine and a tea. It all came out to $75, after tax, before tip. We're planning on going again, and it looks like it would be good for lunch too. The restaurant has another part and seems to be popular for weddings and other types of parties.
I went there a few times. The kitchen is not very wanted, but it is correct in what it offers. the terrace overlooks a parking lot, but if you cross it you will have a beautiful view of the lachine canal. the building is an old cotton factory, hence the originality of the place. Baroque interior room. the service is unequal
Major event...major review. We booked the venue after visiting the restored industrial building...shabby retro chic! Also tried the restaurant next door (l'Ambroisie) to check out the food...very good. Full marks to Nathalie, Kevin, Marty, and company for discussing all aspects of the reception with us. Also thanks for giving us some freedom with our own decorations, inviting guests after the wedding supper, and more. We brought our own dj and he simply plugged in to the in-house sound system. We also appreciated the surround speakers in the reception hall and on the terrace for announcements, etc. The guests all enjoyed the meal. If the timing between courses could have gone a little faster, I would have given 5 stars. Staff very attentive...excellent service. My daughter, new son-in-law, and both our families couldn't be more pleased with the evening. We will be talking about this one for years to come.
We have attended many, many weddings. This was our second time at this venue and not much has changed. The venue is nicely located next to the water. And the parking is okay (well super narrow spots but located right next to the venue, and you have to pay). The interior is nice if you like the old, rustic, warehouse look. The setup is fine. For the ceremony, you can seat about 60 people. Everyone else, prepare to stand. The appetizers are okay. The beef skewers and the sliders were popular. Be warned. Eat as much as you can because the service is VERY slow. And there was this one waitress who was just rude. She took away my soup after I inquired whether there was cream in it. Did not even ask. Just whisked it away. The soup was watered down and bland by the way. If there was cream, they were really stingy with it. It took about 30 minutes just for the staff to take the orders. So. Soup. Bland. Bleh. Tasteless. Entrées were okay. If you had the salmon tartare. No dressing on the few leaves of greens on the plate. They served a little sorbet to clean the palate. And there was a wait of about 45 minutes until the main arrived. Really. That long. And. It was so not worth the wait. The salmon dish was dry and it was served with a bland white sauce. There was supposed to be shrimps there but we did not find any. The beef Wellington with foie gras was dry. And no foie gras to be found. The sides of vegetables and potatoes were undercooked and overlooked respectively. Lastly, the dessert tasted like a cake bought from Costco. Some chocolate mousse cake with a squiggle of some kind of red coulis. Not a coincidence that both experiences were similar. While the venue is centrally located and presents well, there is much to be improved in the service and quality of food.
