I've always wanted to try this restaurant since it opened not too long ago. It is cute, cozy, and apparently focuses mostly on its cuisine. We were seated in front of the restaurant where we could contemplate the passersby, mostly tourists, walking along Montreux' main street which features very well designed windows showing off the latest trends in European fashions. We were presented with an elaborate menu featuring many items that you might find in a gourmet restaurant in nearby France. I ordered snails in a burgundy sauce, which were fabulous, and my partner opted for a green salad topped with goat cheese. She got exactly what she expected and had hoped for.As my entree, I ordered steak tartare, nicely dressed and spiced. The meat's red color showed its freshness; my guest chose frog legs (a house specialty) in olive oil, garlic, and parsley. Given her selection, we decided that her best wine choice would be a local Valais made from the "petite arvine" grape, and I went for a red -- a young pinot noir'.It is a good restaurant, and we promised to return.
We were originally booked in another restaurant but due to an error we found ourselves here, and am very glad we did. For some reason the place was empty on a Saturday night and based on the meal we had I can't understand that. The food was exceptionally good and the waiter was really friendly and polite. Montreux is quite expensive for food but this was certainly one of the more reasonable we found. There was a lovely ambiance about the place and I really can't recommend it enough.
Good location, good food, good service. It is peaceful and have good music ambient. Had a great time eating.
The Montreux Jazz Festival never fails to attract large crowds, which makes it sometimes difficult to find a table. We opted for the Grand'Rue, simply because we were hungry, the menu looked okay and reasonably priced, and there were tables available. My wife ordered a steak (entrecôte) with vegetables and house fries. The meat was tasty but some parts of the cut were somewhat tough.I ordered fillets of perch (filets de perche) with lemon butter and house fries. Not a good choice to make in this restaurant. The fish was absolutely tasteless, and it seemed that no amount of additional lemon butter and pepper could help. I even added salt (which I do only in extreme situations), which didn't make it any better. I ate the fish because I was hungry, but these were definitely the worst filets de perche I have ever eaten. The house fries were okay, though. We will not return to Le Grand'Rue, nor will we recommend it of course. This is regrettable, because the service was excellent and quite friendly, the presentation of the food was appealing, and the restaurant itself is modern, clean, and welcoming. It may just be that the kitchen had a bad day.
