Stepping into this restaurant feels like going back in time. It is a family-owned establishment that focuses on serving delicious food without the flashy decor common in modern Nairobi restaurants. The kitchen operates with a sense of confidence and skill that is evident in every dish. I started with the Gujerati thali, which included a variety of bhajia, three curries, chapatis, and rice. The curries were especially outstanding, with one having a subtle lemony flavor that balanced the earthiness of the dhal. The only downside was that there was too much food, but the staff kindly offered me more.
I had lunch at this restaurant on the 27th of January after discovering it through a Gujarati friend. The food is a delicious blend of authentic Gujarati flavors with a local African twist! The Thepla Shak and Mixed Bhajiya Platter were outstanding, as was the Masala Tea. I also ordered some food for my long bus journey to Mombasa. Owner Dipakbhai Nathwani and I discovered we had many childhood connections, making it a memorable experience. He even helped arrange a taxi to the Karen Blixen Museum and contacted ISKCON in Mombasa to assist with my stay there - demonstrating excellent hospitality. Many menu items can be made vegan upon request and can also be prepared to withstand long safari trips.
It feels like going back in time. a family-run place that wants to feed you and feed you well, with none of the razzmatazz of much modern nairobi. cooking has the time-honoured, quiet security of an place that really knows what it does. I had the gujerati thali to begin a plate of varied bhajia with pickles, then three curries with chapatis and rice. the curries were especially raised, he, the yellow (from my ignorance,) which added a subtle, lemony overtone to the more earthy baptism of the dhalses. the only mistake was that it was too much to end eating, but that didn't stop them to offer me top-ups!
