We only received one piece of fish in each meal, and the poutine had large chunks of soggy slimy mushrooms in it. When we called to ask about where the second pieces of fish were and why the poutine had been ruined with huge chunks of soggy mushrooms, we were told that they took out order down wrong and apologized, cool we are all human and make mistakes. our answer on the poutine was that the hunter sauce they use comes with mushrooms in it. When pressed on why they dont advertise that a pretty basic food item such as poutine would come with an ingredient that is not in poutine, the answer was "hmm I don't know, that's a good question." After driving back to the food market, all they offered was to make the extra fish and charge us for it. Conveniently in the time of leaving to the time of returning they added mushrooms to the description of the poutine on their chalkboard menu. When asked for a refund on our now half hour cold mistake, we were laughed at and told that's not how the food industry works. The incredibly rude staff refused to give us the name of a manger or the owner. In the end we left our $50 and the food on the counter. Watch out for this place, you will pay for their mistakes and when you speak up they will laugh at you. Looks like Trollers fish and Chips down on Front St, will continue to be our go to place for fish and chips. I have never had to make a complaint, their staff is far superior and their poutine is real poutine.
If you enjoy fish and chips and don't care about fancy decor or atmosphere, this is a place to check out in South Nanaimo. Located inside a shop that also sells deli items, local organic items, handmade soaps...it is a popular stop for locals and tourists too.My husband and I had the fish and chips, one with halibut, one with snapper. Both arrived quickly and well prepared.Fish was nicely battered and crispy, with good- sized portions. Delicious chips too. Not a fan of the coleslaw which was made with a slightly sweet oil type dressing. I prefer creamy style coleslaw. That could be improved.I also thought that the location of some tables in very close proximity to fragrant soaps etc, could be improved. We moved to another table because of this but there aren't a lot of tables to choose from, if the place was busy.Overall, we were happy to have found this place and will be back for more fish and chips.
.they are sooooo...cheap in some respects! On our last visit out there, the waitress was quibbling over a tiny container of coleslaw that she apparently didn't charge for when we paid, her error. She actually came over while we were eating and kept hinting about the $1.50 that this coleslaw was suppose to be. We had already paid almost $40 for a very ordinary lunch for two, with no chips with my order and a small portion of chips for my husband's. I thought it was very cheap and quite tacky to even bring this up (and keep dwelling on it) considering we were regular customers up to then, very complimentary and had shared a very positive, previous review here at Trip Advisor. Not the way to treat good customers, a big turnoff. We are going back to Yorkie's Fish and Chips in Parksville from now on when we want fish and chips. A bit of a drive to get there but worth it. Yorkie's has excellent food and unlimited chips AND coleslaw! Prices are about the same and you never leave there hungry.
The Fish and Chip Hut at Riverside Food Market is another hidden gem of the beautiful City of Nanaimo. Located in Nanaimo South, not far from the Highway 19 and 19a split, across the highway from Rona, situated right next door to the incomparable Hearthstone Artisan Bakery. There. Now you have two reasons to visit this end of town. The market, fresh meats and fresh fish section are all truly superb, with a great selection of fresh produce, fine meats and fish. We almost always end up buying something in the way of grocery items like specialty meats, smoked salmon and jerky. The little restaurant inside the market is a treasure all of it's own. We have eaten there and done take out many times and have no complaints whatsoever. The food is delicious and the portions are generous. It's been quite some time since I've had such a yummy schnitzel on a bun. We got them with everything, which turned out to be a good choice. My schnitzel was so big, I ended up folding it in half, and it just fit the oversized bun! Amazing value. Their fries are the best in the region. Thick cut, tender and delicious. Their fish and chips is my hands down favourite anywhere in Nanaimo, but the pièce de résistance is their homemade schnitzel, in chicken or pork, with hunter gravy including fresh mushrooms, served with homemade spaetzle and rotkohl. It's been years since I've tasted freshly homemade spaetzle and this chef is truly great. Another huge perk of having a restaurant and a market is that you can often buy homemade schnitzel, cooked and uncooked, in the market area. We had cod and chips one evening and bought schnitzel for later that week. One less thing not to miss from home. Fantastic! Riverside Food Market has become one of our favourite places in Nanaimo to both shop and eat. Check it out.
Have tried several other fish and chip stores in Nanaimo and we consider this establishment to be the best.
