This was the most difficult review I have ever done. I believe my cousin described it perfectly. This was not a dinner, this was an experience. We were greeted at the door at by the owner who asked for our first names and proceeded to check in with us using our names as the dinner progressed. This was a home atmosphere, while it was a spectacular home, I felt like I was in a grand dining room in the 1800's and loved every second of it. Mrs. Smith gave us a short history of the house as we were taken to our table. We were then greeted by our server, David and offered us a detailed mouthwatering description of the courses available to us. There are good restaurants that offer personalized professional service, or great tasting food, and some even offer an elegant atmosphere to enjoy your dinner. The Standard offers it all and every aspect of was beyond excellent. David, who we found was training as a sommelier was able to let me know the correct way to order a martini exactly how I wanted it and the wine with dinner was wonderful. Then comes the food. Our starters of Fried Green Tomatoes with Lump Crab Meat with Caper Aioli Creole Mustard Remoulade were the best I have ever had, sliced, seasoned and fried perfectly with a remoulade to die for. The lobster dip with fennel, cheddar smoked gouda were served with a Garlic Onion Baguette that I wish we had leftovers of because I could eat that every day. My cousins had the LUMP CRAB BISQUE with Crème Fraiche Chives. While I didn't taste it, I could see by the empty cups, they were well enjoyed. For the main course, my cousin and I had the BLACKENED CHILEAN SEABASS with Corn Avocado Salsa Mashed Potatoes. When I say it was the best I have ever had, even that is an understatement. It was blackened but it did not overpower the flavor of the seabass. The ability to prepare a fish like that is a skillset, few chefs have. The salsa was the sweet, texture needed for this fish and those mashed potatoes were creamy, buttery and flavorful. My mouth still craves those flavors days later. My husband and my cousin both had filet mignon. My cousin had the Prime Filet with The Standard Sauce, Truffle Hash Cake, Fried Tobacco Onions. The meat was cooked perfectly, the truffle hash cake had the right amount of truffle and the onions gave the meal the final crunch. My husband had Filet Mignon from the butcher block with Red Wine Veal Bordelaise sauce and asparagus. The asparagus were seasoned and sauteed perfectly, the filet was also cooked exactly as ordered. The red wine veal bordelaise sauce, my husband described as the best sauce he has ever tasted in his life. My cousin even stole some of his sauce for her Filet Mignon because it was that good. For dessert, the key lime pie was tart and sweet with a sweet crumb crust unlike any crumb crust. The waiter also heard us say that it was a birthday celebration and brought out their soft, warm almost cooked chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream on top for me, with a candle on it. It was a perfect ending to a perfect meal and perfect night in a perfect restaurant. This restaurant is not your standard restaurant. It IS the standard to which all others should try to emulate. When you make your reservation, if handicap access is needed, just let them know and a ramp will be placed at the front door for access.
I don't even know where to start. I don't leave reviews often, but when I do, it's to acknowledge an outstanding experience, something The Standard delivered and exceeded our expectations! I have been to 40 states and 30 countries, and I can truly say that this was in the top three best dining experiences of my life. That being said, my wife and I have lived around Nashville for a few years and have always wanted to eat here, and this weekend couldn’t have been a better excuse to splurge. My wife became a U.S. citizen this past week, then a few days after, it was our fourth wedding anniversary, and then next week is her birthday! Unfortunately, no reservations were available, but Sharon helped us get in at the last minute on a Saturday. We’re so unbelievably lucky and grateful because I NEEDED that experience. We arrived at 7:45 sharp and were whisked away to our table, where Rylee took care of us for the evening. The ambiance was so warm and inviting. The restaurant was quiet, with music playing subtly in the background, with tunes like Frank Sinatra to set the mood. We started with some drinks and the Filet Tartare. When I say it was another level, it was on another level. We were about to order another, but Rylee showed up with our Caesar salad, the best I’ve had in a long time. From there, the main course arrived – I was close to getting the seabass, but my wife talked some sense into me, and we both went with the Standard Filet. This is why men need a better half because sometimes, you need sense talked into you! My wife was spot-on, and this was, by far, the best steak I’ve ever eaten, which says a lot because I’ve been to steakhouses in Brazil and Argentina, two countries known for their beef. This blew those out of the water. We both ordered it rare, and it was cooked to perfection. We savored every bite. I don’t usually eat that slowly, but I needed to make this last. Finally, the last bite came, and I was so sad. Everything about this was perfection – the truffle, the sauce, the steak – I’ve never had a combination like it. We were about to call it a night, but Rylee came over and offered us a heated-up red velvet cookie with Madagascar vanilla ice cream on top. Holy moly, YES. Ugh. Everything about the Standard was absolute perfection. Sometimes, you might be inclined to check out the newer modern steakhouse overlooking the city, overlooking a place like The Standard – I implore you to reconsider and GO HERE.
