The Potstickers (dumplings, mandoo, etc) are in thinner wrappers than most areas and are available in pork, shrimp and vegetarian varieties (all worth a try). The other dishes have a meat and vegetables selected for quality, which results in a good base taste. The when it comes to the sauces they are balanced and lightly applied to bring out flavor and not cover up the taste of poorly selected/ prepared ingredients. For spicy dishes they rely on real peppers and spices not salt and vinegar which is an unfortunate failing in most US restaurants but thankfully not here. The menu is in Chinese and English. The decor is clean and nothing special, but the food will always make Ollie's a must stop at restaurant for my infrequent NYC visits.
If you want a great meal at an amazingly low price in an area filled with pricey meals, this is your place. Frankly, I won't eat anywhere else in the theater district. Orange Crispy Beef to die for. With soup and rice $10 for lunch. Beat that Restaurant Row (prix fixe $30)
Best Chinese food in NY City, a locals only kind of place off of 42nd, great food and service, get here early place gets busy quick
That may have been the best Chinese food I've ever eaten! Atmosphere so so but food was outrageously good.
I like Ollies. I'm a local so I try to time it away from the pre theater crowd. But I digress, the food is right spot on and reliable. The staff know their jobs and kept me and my 6 year old happy and fed. There were some other folks there who, by the appearance of their demography, knew a thing or two about Chinese food. They were going on about how good it was. I will continue my 4-president run coming to this restaurant.
