I used to really enjoy this place, but after my last visit, I was very disturbed. I looked up their health rating on Yelp, and now I won't be dining here again. It's completely unacceptable.
Well...... if you are looking to order a $20 piece of bread, I have the spot for you!!!! I ordered here a few months ago, and it was great even posted a glowing review. The ratio of meat to bread is now to 10/90. I know we are going through rough times but please don't make me pay $20, plus tax, tip and delivery fees $30!!!!!!! for a $1 piece of bread with a dash of meet in velveeta. Photo attached.
Overall, my experience was pretty disappointing. I ordered a Philly cheesesteak that was impressively large—definitely too much for me, though it might be the right portion for most people. Unfortunately, the meat lacked any real flavor, and the bread was pretty bland. There wasn't much to engage my taste buds; it needed a better mix of flavors. On top of that, the staff seemed indifferent and had an attitude, which didn't help the experience. Additionally, the upstairs area is completely closed, and I'm not sure how this restaurant will manage to stay afloat relying solely on takeout!
In the era of COVID 19, I make sure to try to revisit a lot of the places I 've been to in the past. So when I was in the area I thought about Shorty 's, especially since they close their Brooklyn location it 's harder to get around to them. We entered the door and upstairs is blocked off with barroom furniture, so we followed the sign and went directly downstairs. I should have left instead. 1st issue: the menu posted on the glass, at the register is no longer accurate. If your prices have been different for any amount of time that menu should reflect that, whether it is a sticker, marker, tape, post it or whatever. I have no problem with price changes, but they are quite surprising when to regular cheesesteaks total 31. 2nd issue: no sanitizer anywhere and the space is dingy and not so nice. There was a boiler room of sorts with pipes and such with ripped insulation hanging down from the ceiling. I wish I saw this before ordering. And kitchen staff kept coming in and out. I really wish I had seen this. 3rd issue: The indignant cashier with a droopy mask, more interested in a conversation with co workers. This really should have been my 1st cue to leave, but once again, trying to support local businesses I know are decent. 4th issue: the food. Two sandos felt like one. Very lightweight. I 've been to multiple locations on many occasions and this didn 't feel like a Shorty 's original. Still, I kept positive. I was sooooo wrong. What happened to this place? The quality of the cheesesteak was awful! Tasteless, fatty meat, an even thinner cheese sauce and a few onions sprinkled in. Fishing out gristle while you 're eating is not my idea of a good time. It is very obvious that they have changed the bread from the original kind they used to have brought in from philly. Now its regular old hero bread trimmed from some local Bodega! The amount of filling in each sandwich has been cut down to half! And after eating this tasteless waste of time, my stomach decided it was 'no bueno ' on the stomach too! What the hell? So let 's get this straight..... charging more for less quality and quantity a dingy space and half ed service!? 30 minutes of asking God to help my digestive system. No thank you! This was infuriating. This was a 0 star experience. The two there were for nostalgia.
Really enjoyed our time here. The food was good and satisfying and our waiter was very attentive. It's a chill little bar with not a lot of thrills but it gives you just what you need to unwind and enjoy food, friends and maybe some sports.
