The Great Northern Hotel - Newcastle

We stopped at the Great Northern Hotel in Hamilton Newcastle, NSW for a drink this evening. It's an interesting hotel and The staff couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. We had already had dinner but the hotel restaurant's menu looked sensational. Really well sourced food (eg. Cowra lamb. Manning river beef). We will have dinner here next time we visit Newcastle. It was recognised in the SMH Good Food Guide in 2014.

While the place it looking a bit old inside, the location is really good and near quite a few other good drinking spots. Reasonably cheap and decent food. Interesting crowd on some weekend nights.

The food was good pub food. The staff were good. The prices reasonable. The building very old in need of some help. Great location all a adequate.

We had been told "The Soorlies" we're playing at this hotel, so we went early because we had my daughter and son-in-law and the grandchildren with us. We ordered our meal and three of us chose the roast pork. It is absolutely superb - succulent and tender. The crackling lived up its name too! Highly recommended. The others had beef burgers, a chicken burger and the youngest one had a yummy pasta dish with meatballs. It was a grand old hotel.

My friends and my husband and I couldn't have asked for a more welcoming hostess, Alice couldn't be more obliging The hotel rooms were clean and modern, we were upgraded to an ensuite at no extra charge and were welcome to sit and chill in front of the fire with our own wine . In the morning Alice outdid herself with the most amazing continental breakfast using a lot of her wonderful home made produces. We will be back with more friends, watch out Castlemaine!!!
