Hayashi Sushi Grill - Newport News

We opted for a private table instead of sitting at the hibachi grill. The menu offered a great selection of sushi, appetizers, and main dishes. Everything we tried was delicious, especially the beef, which was tender and juicy. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. My only issue was with the lighting; I prefer brighter restaurants. While I understand they were aiming for a specific ambiance, I like to see my food clearly without having to squint.

The decor and location of this restaurant were excellent. However, the food and service did not match the ambiance. Our party of three was the only group in the hibachi area, and the server appeared to be unfamiliar with the menu. We experienced a lengthy wait for both our food and the chef to start cooking. The dishes were underseasoned and lacking in flavor. We've had much better service and higher quality food at other Japanese steakhouses.

Expect to pay $40-50 per person when all added up. I am not sure the the good food and okay service was worth that much.

Do NOT make reservations online! They do not use OpenTable! My group of seven was turned away!

Great sushi variety, great quality, talented sushi chefs. Interesting and unusual starters.
