We arrived around 4 PM and were tempted by the delicious-looking mussels, only to be informed that they were sold out. How could that happen at 4 PM? Everything else we tried was unimpressive and lacked flavor, and the presentation was just as uninspiring.
The crab cakes had an excellent balance of crab to breadcrumbs, which is exactly what I look for in a good crab cake. They were soft and bursting with flavor. I highly recommend them! However, the mussels were the one dish I didn’t enjoy. They were too salty for my taste, and I prefer my mussels to be swimming in a rich sauce. Additionally, about a quarter of the mussels were closed, which could indicate they weren't in season. The truffle mushroom flatbread was wonderfully rich and cheesy, making for a great carb addition to our meal. As for the lobster risotto, I found it delightful! There was a generous amount of lobster throughout, and it was creamy and satisfying. Lastly, the salmon summer roll was very refreshing, with fresh salmon complemented by avocado and aioli. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant!
The service was good, but the food was just average. I think they really need to improve their kitchen operations, as it seems like the quality is declining. It's unfortunate to see the restaurant so empty, especially when other places are bustling during peak hours. We enjoyed our time with a bottle of wine, and while the steak was decent, I didn't appreciate seeing the kitchen staff come out to watch TV in the dining area—this suggests a lack of leadership. Parking is available on the street or in nearby garages.
To start, my partner was a bit confused because the restaurant is located across from the aquarium, and the nearby parking garage is named the Maritime Garage. We weren’t sure if we could park there if we weren't visiting the aquarium, but it turns out we could. However, there’s very limited street parking available. When we entered the restaurant, it was almost empty, and we received excellent service. I ordered a bariatric-friendly meal—a delicious omelette made with egg whites, tomatoes, spinach, and cheese. I tried a potato on the side, but it was too peppery for my taste. My partner mentioned that his Benedict was good overall, although two of the egg yolks were a bit firmer than he would have preferred. He also didn’t care much for their English muffins. In general, I think Beach House is a solid option if you're looking for a nearby place to eat. They seem to cater well to bariatric patients, as they’re open to customizing dishes. I was surprised that I nearly finished the entire omelette, which is quite an achievement for me!
When our food arrived, I was immediately dissatisfied with the presentation of my meal. I’m not overly concerned with how it looks, but it honestly did not seem like it would be satisfying. My sandwich was cut in half, but one half had plenty of steak while the other was mostly just bread, onions, and cheese—barely any steak at all. The appearance of the steak reminded me of the frozen Steak-Umm I used to love, but it lacked any flavor. Despite the cheese and grilled onions, the sandwich was incredibly bland. The truffle fries I ordered on the side were drenched in truffle oil. I enjoy truffle oil, but this was way too overpowering. As for my girlfriend's dish, since I was still somewhat hungry after barely touching my meal (who wants to eat a half sandwich consisting mainly of bread, cheese, and onions?), I took a look at her plate. Unfortunately, she had a similar experience. The rice served with the salmon was mushy; with a little persuasion, I might have believed it was grits. The salmon itself was quite bland and tasted more fishy than I would have liked, missing the flavor of the supposed lemon butter capers. If I had to find one redeeming quality about her dish, it was that the salmon wasn’t dry— that’s about it. In summary, we had a very disappointing lunch for $50 (which included a draft beer each). This was honestly one of the worst experiences I’ve had in SoNo, and it’s unfortunate that they serve food like this to their customers.
