Yes, they do have a dead puffer fish hanging from one of the lanterns... but the sushi is beyond wonderful! The rolls and the pieces are huge. The hand roll was piled up like an ice cream cone and over flowing! You definitely get your money's worth. Wait staff is friendly and very polite. The owner and head sushi chief, Steve, is a total character! Stay on his good side and he will be very good to you! Definitely a nice little low key place with excellent food. Totally worth a try if you are in the neighborhood!
Still holding out hope that they will reopen one day at same location or a new location there is a go fund me page (just search for sushi n joy . There was a kitchen fire in August and Steve was badly burned. The sushi was among the best in all of San Diego County and hands down the best value. I wish Steve and his wife and staff the best, no matter what they do and wish them well during these hard times :
Excellent every time! You can tell that Steve and his wife appreciate their customers. Still open for takeout during COVID as of June 2020. We usually get a couple of rolls and then a few other things. We've tried and loved the baked mussels, sashimi plate, dragon roll, heart attack roll, pearl roll, dynamite, and a few of the specials. Give the koma (fish jaw) a try! So good! Can't wait to come back, although my wallet will appreciate the break (not expensive for the quality, but we always order so much food)!
Best cali rolls ive had sad to see them close. This place was a little hole in the wall but a total gem
When I arrived here I wondered how Yelpers had come to rate the place with 4+ stars. It doesn't look like much. In fact it doesn't really look good at all. But they do a real good job with the raw fish thing. Not knowing that the rolls and individual sushi servings are bigger than other places I've been (in fact bigger than ANY place I've been) so, I over ordered. Oh well, not only big but really quite good. They offer a big selection of rolls of which many are, or at least appear to be, original. Mine was fantastic and it was sort of huge. I also soaked a few orders of unagi and hamachi in wasabi laden soy sauce. The sushi was also large and they topped it with an extra piece of fish. The decor is downright shabby. For example, the wooden chairs look like something you would find in a Salvation Army shop. It isn't a stylish place but I'll go back because the food is the strength of the restaurant.
