The founder, Dave Anderson, has always had a deep passion for ribs and barbecue, a love that ignited in his childhood in Chicago, where his father would bring home the best slow-smoked ribs from a local restaurant. This inspired great recipes, just like the ones crafted in small towns in Hawaii, where locals sell homemade food directly from their kitchens—a wonderful way to share culinary passion with others. Dave embarked on a 25-year journey across the country, tasting and learning the art of smoked meats, from traditional grills to mesquite pits. In May 1994, he opened the first Famous Dave’s in Hayward, Wisconsin, and the rest is history. The restaurant's decor mimics a shack from the deep South, featuring corrugated aluminum siding and rustic cedar wood that enhances the authentic BBQ vibe. Hand-picked antiques adorn the walls, creating a welcoming atmosphere that feels like home. The background music complements the decor perfectly, setting a warm ambiance for your meal. Before your food arrives, your server will take you on a "sauce tour," allowing you to sample different flavors and choose your favorite. You can pick from a variety of sauces: Rich Sassy, which is sweet and tangy with a blend of herbs and spices; Georgia Mustard, a delightful mix of mustard and brown sugar; Texas Pit, a tangy tomato-based sauce with a peppery kick; and Sweet Zesty, which offers an authentic “straight from the pit” taste with a balance of lemon sweetness and gentle spices.
