The student cateria near the residences has a small vegan area. Most of the cafeteria sells pizza, onion rings, meat sandwiches, omelet bar and typical cafeteria food. There was a small corner that had four vegan options. There is also a salad bar that had some other articles. You pay $14 for everything you can eat. I guess the students get a lower price on a meal plan? There might have been some vegan options in the cafeteria, but they were not obvious. I'm glad they have options for vegans.
My friend and I were on the Brewer 's Farmer's market on Sunday and decided to finally try the Vegan Cart over the street in Carleton U. We had a little difficulty finding the right cafeteria, so make sure to see the Carleton U map before you go (it is actually quite close to the O-Train stop, but not one of the next buildings). Actually, it was a fun adventure, given the new development on campus. If you find the similarities, you will see a Tim Horton 's and think you are in the wrong place, but if you go to the 3rd floor, you will find the cafeteria. There the vegan car was not marked as such. It would have been nice if there was a label system so you could say what items were vegan, but we asked a food prep worker, and she happily accompanied us to the station and explained that the salad bar is there on weekdays after 11:00, but not on weekends (or maybe it comes after our dining room session as we were there for a late lunch). The 4 Chafing courts (Hot-Mains) at the station held another duck. It's self-service and eating all-you-can. There was a jambalaya with kidney beans and a pretty looking red rice, a sweet curry (not a dessert as it was full of vegetables), lemon corn with herbs, and an unmarked dish that I would call a mild spicy Shephard's cake. Not sure whether it was beef, parsnip, potatoes or a combination from above, but it had quinoa in it, a few beans and overall very tasty. None of us could taste the lemon in corn. There was a salad bar, and the Balsamico vinaigrette was medium-heavy what I liked. We said it was vegan. There were two bowls of green, some chopped tomatoes, cauliflower and broccoli to choose from. Also some toppings, like shredded carrot and cut olives. There were some quinoa tabouli and a chickpea salad that looked vegan, but since we were not told whether there was honey or some milk in it, we did not try it. A green point would be helpful. It was probably suitable for lacto-ovo-vegetarians. For drinks, I think there was some orange and apple juice, but there was also a corner with chilled soy milk and chocolate soy milk. There were desserts in some areas of cafeteria fruit. I wasn't sure how to wash the plums or peaches, so I stuck with other fruits. All in all, the meal was filled, pleasant and tasty. All my needs were met as a vegan. I would encourage others to try. It is a convenient place to dine when in the neighborhood.
This restaurant is a good option for those with a meal plan and residing on campus.
