I've tried their sandwiches, salads, and plates, but they aren't really great. The garlic has a strange vinegary taste, the potatoes are not crispy, and the rice is not good. The sandwiches are okay, but they can be soggy, especially during busy hours. For the amount you get, they are pretty good. Overall, I would give this shawarma a 2.8 out of 5. I have had better shawarma elsewhere.
A while ago, I bought a couple of Gift Certificates to Shawarma King (530 Rideau Street, Ottawa, Ontario) during the Ottawa Sun MEGA Mondays Deals. Basically, it was a $50 Gift Certificate for a $25 purchase amount. I had already used 2 of them before and had no problem with their redemptions. Last week, I tried to use one which I had for a while now; dated or stamped Fall 2011 and the Owner did not accept it; saying that it was 2 years old. Regardless of him not knowing how to calculate the months difference, it was not recognized. I spoke with the Ottawa Sun and they indicated that I should go back to the restaurant and explain my case, again. I bought these gift certificates and like everyone else, expect a business to honor their Gift Certificates. The owner was not going to budge, not even just a little bit. He told me to ask the Ottawa Sun for another gift certificate or refund; as he was too dishonest to honor my Gift Certificate. I do not care that he did not give me the full value; let alone the $25 I am out from buying the unless certificate. I am ticked off because I lost 25 hard earned dollars and being cheated from a dishonest Restaurant owner. I'll admit that the Chicken Shawarma is pretty good, but would not go back or recommend this Restaurant to anybody I know. Why go to a place when you know the owner is dishonest and would rip you off, just like me.
The restaurant offers a fantastic take-out menu and dining in is also enjoyable. Additionally, they have parking available, which is a great convenience for downtown. Overall, indulge in their wonderful cuisine.
Ordered family feast for delivery. Tried to use an online ordering site that this business subscribes to, but the coupon code wouldn't work; called in my order with the business and they honoured the deal. Food was good Fresh, hot. While the store forgot the pita order, they quickly corrected this and dropped these off in 15 mins or so. Would like the potatoes crisper, but still good and tasty. Easily enough food for 5 with leftovers.
This shawarma is ideal for take-out; however, the building itself needs renovations. The indoor eat-in area (about 30 seats) is tidy well kept, but the rest of the place looks like a 'greasy spoon. ' The outdoor patio looks like it 's seen better days; the wheelchair access ramp (in the parking lot area) is riddled with huge pavement cracks. The ceiling tiles are discoloured (with some brown spots); the men 's washroom has duct tape holding the light switch together. The washroom sink could also use some caulking work. I ordered a Shawarma Chicken Plate; the shaved chicken is a generous portion size, and the garlic sauce is tangy; two pita breads were also included. However, the garlic potatoes were slightly shrivelled dried out, like they had been sitting in the heater for awhile. The hummus had a slightly rancid taste (I 'm aware that this is the second consecutive day of a heat advisory, the humidity close to 40 degrees Celsius; I don 't know how much this would affect refrigeration). Overall: three a half stars.
