We spent ages exploring this older charming part of Palma and happened upon Calatrava. Being on the sea front but set back and seperated by gardens and terracing this is quite a cool and less bustling part of this magical City. We walked in and were offered a table on the external terrace but chose to sit in the small but cool bar/restaurant. We enjoyed some great tapas/racion servings of seafood and albodingas etc along with their lovely house white. This is a Hotel (which has some grand looking rooms) so we sat amongst guests who all seemed to be enjoying there stay. Not cheap but no too expensive..I really enjoyed the calmer more peaceful atmosphere for a change.
Ate here on our first night and firstly the decor and service are great. The staff were really attentive and even advised us that we may have ordered too much. So really 5/5 for the service. The food was a mix of good and OK. We ordered the almonds which were crunchy and tasty as was the tomato bread. The chorizo in red wine was OK, tasted like a nice meaty spicy sausage, quite peppery but not with the classic pimento/paprika flavour you usually expect from chorizo. The patatas bravas was really disappointing, boiled sliced potatoes with sauce on top. The walnut and goats cheese salad was very tasty, also 5/5. The iberico ham was good but very pricey €24. The Las Maria's Cab Sav was very good, lots of oak and vanilla and the classic bramble flavour. Dessert was the tarte tatin and the chocolate truffles. Tatin was sweet and very tasty and the truffles were made of dark chocolate which complimented the coffee I ordered very nicely indeed. I think if you had picked the right food this may have scored higher however all I can recall is the microwave going ping and the our food arriving at the table. They may have been heating plates or food I don't know but it gives the impression it's not freshly cooked and for that reason it goes from 4/5 to 3/5.
We took lunches and evening meals in the hotel and without exception they were marvellous. The tapas is to die for and whilst the menu is compact everything is delicious and we tried different dishes every night of our four night stay.
