We visited The Plantagenet House on Saturday 10th August to make a dinner booking for Monday 12th August for our wedding anniversary, and should have known that there would be issues as the person taking our booking was sternly advised by another staff member that the diary could only be completed in pencil and not pen, which put her in a panic as she was unable to find one, why, is this a thing? We arrived for our 7:15pm booking time a few minutes early and there was confusion where to seat us as the table allocated had been taken by a walk in, this was quickly sorted and we were seated on table 7, a drinks order was taken and despite the wine glasses being different sizes, presented quiet quickly. No ribeye available so the fillet steak and lobster mains ordered, The Goats cheeses tart was good and the plate removed quickly, so my expectations for the rest of the evening were looking up. More walk-ins came, seated around us, orders placed and there food was on the table before any member of staff came back to us, it was about 45 minutes and no sign of our main meals, so my wife asked a staff member if there was an issue with our order, within minutes et voila, they appeared, and here 's where the disappointing evening peaked, the food had obviously been sat waiting for some time, to be served to us, the lobster was on the hotter side of warm and just enough for my wife, the steak however being cooked to medium, looked as though it hadn 't been anywhere near to a grill, had no heat in it, the chips were cold, the confit obviously retained heat as the steak was on top of it, after 1 mouthful I mentioned it to a staff member who swiftly took it away whilst apologising, expecting a 10/15 minute wait, but no, the same plated fillet steak/chips/confit was back in front of me within 3 minutes and was a steaming plate of microwaved blandness, I called over another staff member, and advised that I was not happy that my fillet steak had been microwaved to get it hot, again more apologies and the offer of selecting another item from the menu or a drink, but I 'd seen and tried enough to sit and wait for anything else, so politely refused the offer. So yes the fillet steak was removed from the bill and the bottle of wine complementary, but with the following comment, don 't give us a bad review because your wine is free , really shows what this place is all about.
Would definitely recommend this gorgeous restaurant. The staff are welcoming and helpful. The food was amazing, we both had the lunchtime chowder with a chilled glass of wine. Wish we had somewhere like this back home.
An unexpected culinary treat. The food was carefully prepared and beautifully presented with generous portions. We both had fish dishes (hake; seafood linguine). Service was friendly and the atmosphere was both comfortable and intriguing in this very old building. We would definitely recommend it and would return should we be in the area again.
Fantastic staff, very attentive. Gluten free options. Lovely music. The 5 of us had a late lunch, everything was utterly superb. Would love to come back but we live 300 miles away
Yet another superb Sunday lunch, one of the best around, absolutely lovely. The Lamb was stunning, lovely atmosphere there too.
