This was a unique, rural Spanish dining experience in which we felt we were enjoying a meal in a private household surrounded by family and friends. There’s quite a bit in Peñaranda De Duero, a beautiful medieval village in the Ribera del Duero wine region, including a picturesque Plaza Mayor, a castle and an historic town centre, of which some buildings are protected as monuments. We wandered around on a hot Sunday in June and after seeing what we wanted to, we were ready for lunch. There’s not much that’s apparent from the street in relation to restaurants, apart from one on the scorching Plaza Mayo. Luckily we spotted the local tourist office who recommended El Refugio de Don Miguel. On arrival, which was a little early by Spanish standards, we were shown into the cosy dining room at the back of the property and advised that lunch was set menu with a couple of choices for each course. The dining room quickly filled with, mainly, family groups and the food started coming. The fixed price meal included a bottle of the local rosé and consisted of starter, main and dessert, with two or three choices for each course. The meal was very good quality, tasty, home style cooking which was fresh and well presented. The total bill for two lunches, including the wine, was an amazing €32. Note, non-Spanish speakers will have difficulty being understood here and the lunch gave my wife some valuable experience with her Spanish speaking and listening skills. This was a unique local experience, totally unpretentious, with good quality local food and wine.

Las instalaciones están muy bien y el trato por parte de los dueños es inmejorable. Con su amabilidad y dedicación, hicieron nuestra estancia mucho más agradable. Sin duda, para repetir.
