Upon arrival, we were greeted by Scott, who made a vague comment about our room before offering us tea and requesting that we fill out a form - a bit redundant, as we had already provided the necessary information via email. Despite the high cost of our stay, we didn't feel particularly welcomed or that our expectations were met. However, the highlight of our visit was the exceptional evening meal served by a charming and entertaining gentleman. Our room felt small and stuffy, prompting us to open the windows and take a stroll to the nearby station, where we found an interesting information center and cafe. Unfortunately, we were caught off guard by the presence of midges, which proved to be a nuisance. The lack of clear information on the website led to confusion regarding what was included in the price, and we were surprised to be charged extra for after-dinner drinks and sweets. To make matters worse, we discovered our room infested with midges upon returning from the meal. Scott came to assist by vacuuming the bedroom and bathroom, which helped alleviate the problem. The breakfast service the next morning was pleasant, but the meal itself left much to be desired. Overall, our stay left us feeling dissatisfied and uneasy, and we have no plans to return in the future.
We indulged in a seven-course tasting menu with three options each for starters, mains, and desserts. The quality of the ingredients shone through in dishes like Monkfish sashimi and Pork belly for starters, and Halibut and Cauliflower steak for mains. Each dish was expertly prepared, presented beautifully, and delicious in taste. The wine selection was impressive, and the prices were reasonable for the level of quality provided. We opted for a Rioja, which paired perfectly with our meal. Overall, we highly recommend this restaurant and give it a perfect 10/10 rating.
The drive down to the restaurant/hotel is long and remote (unless you're arriving by train), but beautiful and easily worth the time. This was definitely one of (if not the biggest) highlight(s) of our holiday in Scotland. The lovely building is located in some beautiful scenery and surrounded by the local deer. We were greeted at the door upon our arrival by Scott (one of the hosts) and Sue, one of the younger deer. The food was exceptional, nearly every dish an astounding hit. Great and unique combinations of flavours, and we were told by some of the other guests that the menu changes every day and had been as great the day before as it was today. After our diner we stayed for some coffee in the lounge area and Scott helped us feed the deer, which was a magical experience. In short; if you're anywhere close to restaurant, you have got to make the small detour. You won't regret it!
Exquisite dining from the first to last forkfull. Everything mouthwatering from our apple martinis which were divine, and the slow roasted lamb to the cheeses, beautiful coffee too. Very cosy and personal. Will absolutely return.
