I had heard of the place by a friend who recommended it and was intrigued by his history. I love learning about how restaurants got their start, so that was exactly my gasse. my waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu that is always appreciated because it shows that they take care of the experience of their customers. eating was amazing, but what I found was how they could counter my food restrictions. they knew how much time and effort it needs to make something gluten-free so they don't hesitate to do what they had to do to make sure that my meal also tastes good! if they look for an incredible culinary experience with authentic decor (and no pretense), then city tavern restaurant is worth checking!
We were in the spacious and shaded garden. service was friendly and attentive, but not intrusive. we shared the seafood pasta special (with crabs, scallops, garnels etc.), the smoked salmon and smoked trout supply served with Irish style soda brot and all nosh garnishes, and the romaine and roquefort cheese salat (has at least 5 ounces cheese) and eat generously.
I came here by recommendation and was intrigued by the history of this place. the service was good and eating even better. my waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and was very excited to give me a little story about some of the drinks. my crabcake appetizer was soft, moist and tasteful. my laughter was perfectly cooked. the waitress was dressed as if we were in the 1700s that I found quite entertaining. this is a definitiw location to check if they stay in philly. I'll be back next time I'm in the opposite.
There's no better place to finish a historic Philly tour, than an elegant dinner at the City Tavern. It's a near literal jump back in time to 1773 the staff in period clothes, metal goblets. The atmosphere is period perfect. The menu is pricey, but worth the money for the sheer pleasure of the ambiance and attention to detail. My soup, though small was very savory (corn chowder), my chicken breast mount vernon, a combo of lightly breaded chicken breast and lump crab was luxurious and the bread pudding was a sweet finish. Do visit the lighting with a harp for entertainment is also perfect for a winning date.
